1st. BATTERY MEN

Annual Reunion Held ‘WONDERFUL FRIENDSHIPS’ Both in Wellington and Auckland, members of the original Ist Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery, which served throughout the war, have revived old memories and friendships each year at their annual reunions. Wellington’s record is an unbroken one, and many members of the unit gathered again last evening for their thirteenth successive reunion since the war. The chairman was Mr. G. Lyon, a former commander of the battery, and although the attendance was perhaps smaller than in the past, the spirit was once again the same. Among those present were Dr. Doctor and Messrs. Parkinson, R. E. Bennett, McKlllop, Ellis, C. McKenzie, “Dune.” Pollock (Masterton), and others. A letter of apology for absence was received from Colonel Symon, who was originally commander of the unit, and apologies came also from old members of the unit in Wellington province and other parts of New Zealand,'including Auckland. The toast of “War Comrades” was proposed by the chairman, who said that the reunion was “purely a unit affair.” As old Ist Battery men they got together once a year for the sole purpose of sitting round the table with one another and chatting about old times. “Therefore,” he said, “I think that it’s only fitting that we should try to bring back memories of those wonderful friendships formed overseas —friendships which are totally different from those formed in any other way, and friendships which will endure right throughout the ages.” Mr. Lyon said that the term “war comrades” covered a very wide field, and he mentioned various other divisions—the infantry, engineers, Army Service corps, nurses, and others—with whom men of the Ist Battery had come into contact.

The toast was responded to on behalf of other branches of the forces by several battery members who were present.

Vocal items by Mr. J. Roeworth, who was accompanied by Mr. T. H. Edmanson, were given at intervals during the evening.
