About People and Events DOMINION’S POPULATION The estimated population of New Zealand proper at June 30 last was 1,524,921, including Maoris, who totalled 69,893. The total population Including that of dependencies and mandated territory is estimated at 1,587,426 by the Government Statistician. Art Union Drawing. The drawing of the “Another Black Cat” art union will take place in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall, Wellington, on Saturday, August 6, commencing at 9 a.m. The drawing will be open to the public. Wrestling Regulations. Provision was made in an amendment to the wrestling regulations gazetted yesterday for the holding of amateur wrestling contests out of doors on good turf. Supreme Court at Westport. An addition to the sittings of the Supreme Court during 1932 was announced in the Gazette last evening, and a fixture has been made for a session at Westport, opening on September 7. Friendly Rugby. A Rugby football match between teams representing the police and combined taxis was played at the Kilbirnie recreation ground yesterday. The fortieth pilot trained by the Wellington Aero Club is Mr. K. G. Wilkes. He passed the test for his A license at Rongotai Aerodrome yesterday. Squad-ron-Leader T. M. Wilkes, Director of air Services, conducted the examination.
Alleged Theft Charged with the theft at Grey town of groceries and tobacco valued at £7O/3/11, the property of the late Mr. Samuel Wall, George Thomas Woodward, aged 39, appeared at the Petone Police Court yesterday morning. He was remanded on bail by Mr. J. Burns, J.P., to appear at Petone on August 12. Electors’ Association’s Loss. A tribute to the memory of the late Mr. A. V. Dallow, sen., was paid at the annual meeting of the Island Bay Municipal Ratepayers’ Association. “He was a respected business man in the community, and a valuable and experienced member of the executive," said the president, Mr. C. F. Lethaby. As a mark of respect to their late colleague the members stood in silence. More Men for Camps. A party of 15 Wellington men left yesterday for the farm relief camp in the Otak! Gorge. The Government Labour Bureau at present is filling a few vacancies In the return soldiers camp at Paraparaumu. In addition parties are shortly to be sent to Oio, Owhango and Waimlh#. There are a total of 36 vacancies for single men, and it is reported that volunteers are rapidly coming forward.
Record Entry. The Wellington Competitions Society Is faced with a considerable task In putting through the musical and dramatic competitions festival, which opens on August 20, in thirteen days. The entries of 3500 exceed the previous best record by 500, and in order to keep schedule time it has been necessary to make use of four halls for the whole of the time. Hitherto two halls and the part time use of a third over a period of three weeks has been necessary.
