Cold Conditions in Wellington
There was a sudden return to winter conditions at Wellington yesterday. Shortly after noon a cold southerly wind Increased in violence and was accompanied by frequent heavy rain squalls. The conditions continued in the evening. The rainfall for the 24 hours ended at eight o’clock last evening was O.lOln. Fine weather prevailed at Auckland, but a moderate southerly wind and overcast sky after midday made conditions very cold. A south-west wind blew up during the night at Christchurch, and toward midday snow fell for an hour, peppering the city and hills. It soon disappeared and the remainder of the day was fine but cloudy. The maximum temperature was 40 deg. at 9 a.m.: at midday the thermometer had dropped to 33.9 deg., but it rose to 37.3 deg. at 5 p.m. A reversion to winter was experienced at Dunedin, with rain and sleet showers In the city and snow on the higher levels.
