“INTO LONG TROUSERS”

Island Bay Electors Meet 21-YEAR-OLD ASSOCIATION “We as an association have now gone into municipal long trousers,” said Mr. C. F. Lethaby, president of the Island Bay Municipal Electors’ Association, referring at the annual meeting, held last evening, to the fact that the organisation had been in existence for 21 years. In that time, he said, the association had been instru'mental in bringing about a great deal of progress in the suburb. Among the 22 who were present at the meeting were Messrs. J. O. Shorlaud and G. R. C. Jackman, two foundation members, whose services to the association were referred to by the president in appreciative terms. The annual report and statements of accounts, (previously published in “The Dominion”) were adopted. Commenting on the work of the year, Mr. Lethaby said the association had every reason to congratulate itself. AmOng its activities, successfully undertake):, were drainage and sewerage questions. Valuable progress had been made as a result of the association’s efforts, and it could be said that another important link had been added to the organisation's chain of service. Street lighting had been improved, and attention had been paid to the question of footpath maintenance, although there was still much to be done in the direction of improving both of these facilities. ‘ er Beach and Private Streets. • Mr. G. R, C. Jackman said the conservation and improvement of the Island hay beach should be kept well to the tore by the incoming executive. The question of the City Council taking over private streets should also be given a prominent place in the deliberations of the association. In answer to a question the president said that inquiries had been made as to the possibility of arranging for the City Council to appoint an agent through .which electric light accounts could be paid. It had been suggested that an Island Bay shopkeeper should be appointed as agent, but this had not been agreed to by the department, it being stated that meter-readers were empowered to accept payments. “The appointment of an agent by a department that is still making fairly colossal profits would be a small service, yet one which would be greatly appreciated,” added Mr. Lethaby. It was decided to take up this question, and also the matter of the proposed change in the system of garbage collection—a change strongly opposed by the association —with the Civic League. Members, in referring to the latter proposal, stated it was undesirable that refuse tins should have to be placed in the street rather than be emptied by the collectors as at present. Mr. 0. J. Howarth referred to the distress existing among families in Island Bay, and Mr. Jackman was appointed to represent the association on the district relief committee. Mr. H. R. Searle, president of the Hataitai Municipal Electors’ Association, was welcomed by the members, and briefly addressed the meeting. Election of Officers.
