HELP FOR BOYS

Those Who Are Workless ACTION BY Y.M.C.A. Campaign Throughout N.Z. A survey of Y.M.C.A. activities on behalf of unemployed boys in all parts of New Zealand has been issued by Mr. R, M. Brasted, National Council secretary for the association. The statistics cover a period from October, 1931, to July 30, 1932. During this period of between nine and ten months, the ten Y.M.C.A. branches have placed 846 boys in employment, and in three-quarters of the placings the work was of a permanent nature. At the end of last month there were 1424 unemployed boys on the Y.M.C.A. registers.

The following statistics show the extent to which the various Y.M.C.A. branches have dealt with the problem of placing workless boys:—

As distinct from temporary work, odd jobs were found for boys in 359 cases, and 268 boys were enrolled in occupational classes, embracing carpentry, boot repairing, salesmanship, and office work. Physical classes' and educational lectures are also conducted weekly by the Y.M.C.A. as a means of keeping up the spirits of unemployed boys. In addition to the above placings, the vocational guidance officer at Dunedin secured permanent positions for 66 boys. The report on boy unemployment adds that a good feature of the Y.M.C.A. efforts is that in Timaru, Wellington, Wanganui, Hamilton, and Dunedin, unemployed men have been engaged as instructors for the groups of boys.
