THE RACING WORLD

GOODWOOD RACES Solenoid Wins Stewards (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) London, July 26. On the opening day, of the Goodwood summer meeting the following was the result of the STEWARDS’ CUP. a handicap sweepstakes. ■ with 1000 sovs. added; second 100 sovs., third 50 sovs.; for three-year-olds and upwards. Six furlongs. Mrs. C. L. Mackepn’s' br. c. SOLENOID, by Soldennis —Shannon Jug, 3yrs 1 Sir Alfred Butt’s br. h. SLIPPER, bv Abbots Trace —Our Liz, Byrs. 2 Mrs. J. B. Joel’s br. h. POLAR BEAR, by Stratford—Polar Belle, Byrs. 3 Twenty-one started. Short head; threequarters of a length. Chile proved inferior to his stablemate, Pacify, in the Novice Stakes on Saturday, but there may be a different story to tell before the spring racing is disposed of (says the Christchurch writer “Argus”). . Chile was having his second start —the first was at Riccarton in November—and he will benefit by experience. He has not done a great deal of sprinting, but he looks fairly forward, as a result of solid work. Chile is a goodlooking Limond and if he trains, on he may rival the form of his brother, Agrion, who won the Derby nearly-five years ag0.,,-: ■ ■;

The rising three-year-old Hilary, whom F. D. Jones trains for Mr. G. F. Moore, is still very lame as the result of a stumble on the tracks recently. Hilary woii'.the Nursery at Trentham on January 22, and promised to train on into a very useful galloper. :

GISBORNE MEETING Winter Fixture Opens To-day •. ■ . ( REVIEW OF THE FIELDS . (By “The Watcher.”) . ' The Gisborne Racing Club’s meeting will open to-day, and conclude on Saturday. Good acceptances have been received, and the runners include several horses from Auckland and Hawke’s Buy. The following may be well backed in their engagements Park Hurdles.-—Atholspear and Kaiti. Hack Flat.—Princess Star and BothFlying Handicap.—Orby’s Choice and Head Serang. - „ Hack and Hunters’ Steeples.—Freehold aild Luna Liix. Maiden Race.—Hunter’s Moon and Black Songster. , „ o Winter Oats.—Teller and Sunny Song. Tramway Handicap.—Beverage and Gold Ruler. The programme is as follows

SCHOOLING TASKS ’Chasers at Riccarton HIGH PITCH GOES WELL Lucess and Billy Boy Impress (By “The Watcher.”) At Riccartoii on Tuesday; morning there was some interesting schooling over the steeplechase fences,-in the middle of the course. Lancer (G.. Murfitt); Apache (G. Dempster), The Babe ,(W*. Pascoe), and High Pitch (R. Beale) were assembled for a trial, which was the last-named horse’s first experience of the big fences. He was allowed a good look at them, then Lancer and Apache went away in the lead, with, The Babe following, and High Pitch kept, behind them. Lancer and Apache maintained the lead for the round, but High-Pitch was close up after the first fence. Both the leaders jumped well, but the performance. of High was most impressive. If he continues to do as well on the course proper, where. he will have a greater variety of jumps, he will come into favour for the Steeplechase, as also for the Hurdles; One circuit of five obstacles only was intended, but Lancer, after jumping a trestle, wanteel to go on, and he continued on his own for another round, topping 1 confidently; ' ■

Lucess Jumps Well. Lucess (D. O’Connor) and Billy Boy (J. Burgess). were partners for two circuits. The first time Billy Boy ran off at ! the second of the double, and carried Lucess with him. but the second time all went well. Lucess gave the more pleasing'display, going straight and cleanly over his fences and improving as” he tvent, Billy Boy also gave a satisfactory exhibition. Paris Schools. Paris (G. Dempster), Taramoa (V. Dempster), and Gay Jim (R. Beale) set off together, the. last-named going for one round, while the brothers continued for another. Gay Jim, who bak not had a race for three years, outjamped the Invercargill horses every time, and more pleasing still he pulled ,up quite sound. As usual, Paris did not jump straight, but he landed cleverly each time, and’ he always does better with the colours up.

Over the .Hurdles! -j Royal Mint (G. Murfitt) was sent oyer three hurdles, jumping two and going back to' negotiate the first again. - Nassock was jumped on Monday over tWo rounds of the schooling hurdles; High Pitch as a Jumper.

Jligh Pitch appears to have shaped very well in his first essny as a steeplechaser at Riccarton ou Tuesday. Provided he continues to improve he ought to do really well at the game, although he is now on the verge of his ninth ycaif. He made a start as a jumper last season when seven years old in a hurdle race.nt the Te Aroha meeting on-March 2, running unplaced. Four of his wins were, however, gained over hurdles. He won at Te Rapa,'Franklin, and Ellerslie (beating Makeup in the Remuera). He was unplaced in the Great Northern Hurdles, won the Raurimu Hurdles at Taumarunui, and was third to Nukumai and Membo in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham.. . This season he began by running unplaced in the Winter Cup. With 9.13 he was third in' the Great National Hurdles to Callamart (9.0) and Lancer (9.0)? He was second in the Sydenham Hurdles to Prince Lu. - He was next thrice unplaced in flat events, and twice in hurdle races. In the Great Northern last month he.finished fourth ’with 10.0. He was unplaced in . the Remuera Hurdles, but won the Campbell Hurdles on the last day of the Auckland meeting. His form' nt Trentham was very moderate. He was sixth in the Trentham Hurdles and sixth in the Winter Hurdles, never threatening danger at any stage. As a steeplechaser, however, he may again be in the limelight.

Airtight Retires. The steeplechaser, Airtight, did pot perform satisfactorily at Trentham, and has been turned out. He ie unlikely to be further persevered with as a racing proposition. Rising ten years Airtight, by Tree Lucerne from Country Air, had his first win as a four-year-old at New Plymouth in a seven-furlong hack race. lie has been moderately successful orer hurdles and steeplechase country, and has won upwards of £2OOO in stakes.

Aga Khan at Hawera. I The three-year-old Aga Khan, who has been under C. Jaeksioh’s care at Ha,wera for some weeks, has made considerable improvement in appearance, arid is beginning to shape well in his track efforts. Formerly trained by M. Carroll at Te Rapa, Aga Khan waS much boomed round the Waikato district, blit has not raced much. He won a maiden race at Te Kuiti in April, beating a moderate field, but is a likely improver, and should be useful around Taranaki tracks.

May Not Stand. Lord Ranald, well bandaged on. both forelegs,’ did useful work on the inside of the course at Riccarton on Tuesday morning, but his prospects of getting through a Grand National preparation do not appear bright. - -

Oriflamb’s Mission. ' Oriflamb is an acceptor for both the South Canterbury Steeplechase and .‘he Teschemaker Hunt Cup Steeplechase, to be run at Washdyke on Saturday. The South Canterbury is likely to be the race in which he will start. Lucess.

. Lucess was not in the picture at any stage of the Combined Handicap on Saturday. and ho finished last, but the race served the good purpose of giving him a run in public. He will be more at home if he is produced in the South Canterbury Steeplechase on Saturday, though his best form may not be seen until the Grand National, a race in which he filled third place last year. Snowfall and Paris beat him easily on that occasion, but Lucess came through the big contest with his refutation as a jumper firmly established. ■

B. 11. Morris’s Mounts. B H. Morris will ride all F. D. Jones’s horses at the Grand National meeting, this arrangement having been made in anticipation of G. Humphries leaving for Australia with Silver Ring on August 5. As he will not now be required to leave early, Humphries has postponed his departure till August 19, and he will be able to ride throughout the Grand National. One of his rides will be Beacon Fire ip the Winter Cup. Related to Good Ones.

Grampion came in for some support in the Novice Stakes at Riccarton on Saturday He never became prominent, but he Will do much better early in the new season, as he is a smart galloper He is a well-grown and good-looking two-year-old by Robespierre, his dam, Watermint, being by Greyspear from Waterspray, the dani of Pilliewinkie (by Winkle) and Arikiwai (by Paladin). Grampian showed useful speed in the autumn, and his breeding suggests that he will stay. Worth Watching.

Minerval flashed up with a great finishing run in the Racecourse Hill Handicap on Saturday, coming home in third place. It was his first race since Easter,, when he was twice In second place at Riccarton. The race should improve him, and he looks n likely sort to get n stake next month. Giggleswick was responsible for a good, effort in this race. He was actually the last horse away, but he showed a fine turn of speed to finish in the bunch behind the placed horses. When trained at Riccarton, he was a useful galloper, and he may get some money before he returns to the West Coast.;
