TROTTING NOTES

Death of Jean McElwyn CLOSE OF 1931-32 SEASON ■■■■'■ (By “Overcheck.") FIXTURES. July 30—South Canterbury Hunt (one event) • August 6, 10, 12—New Zealand Metropolitan T.C. August. „ , . August 27—Otago Hunt Steeplechase (two events). . September 3—New Brighton T.C. Spring. September 10—Wellington T.C. Spring. Passing of- Jean McElwyn. That game and consistent mare Jean McElwyn died at the end of lust week. She commenced racing as a two-year-old, contesting one event, viz., the Trial Handicap at Ashburton in June, 1927. bho had a strenuous time as a three-yeat-old, contesting 26 races, winning four, being placed second’ in six others, and four times third. In the 1928-1929 season she was faced on 32 occasions, winning two races and being placed five times second and five times third. In the 1029-30 season she was produced 28 times, but secured only one winning bracket. Eight seconds and seven thirds completed the placed performances. At six years she raced seven times, winning one event at Greymouth in October, 1930. In all she won £4702 in stake money, so that she paid her way as a racing proposition. She has produced a filly foal to Jack Potts, and it will be interesting to see how the youngster turns out. On het breeding she should be good. Unfortunate Illness.

It is with regret that advice has been received to the effect that Mr. H. F. Nicol], who was to have left for Europe shortly, is suffering from a severe attack of pneumonia. Returned.

It is stated that F, B. McFarlane has decided not to persevere with Nyallo Silk and has returned the gelding to “Roydon Lodge." ' If was reported that Nyallo Silk was showing improved form on the tr.ck, but he-lias not shown'up as well as expected with the colours up.

An Improved Showing. Directum is reported to have given - an improved showing’at Riccarton on Sato urday. He is said to have gone, away much better than usual, though still losing some ground, and afterwards to have run quite promisingly. He is to be spelled for the rest of the winter.

Match Arranged. After prolonged negotiations, Mr. G. Elnsiedel has agreed to accept Mr. L. S. Martin’s challenge to race his pacer Almont Wilke's against Walla Walla '■ in Sydney. The date of the match has not yet been fixed. Walla Walla is Australia’s champion and holds the records for the Melbourne and Sydneyshows. He has won big events in New, South Wales, Queensland, and Tasmania. Of the £250 offered by • the New So.uth Wales Trotting Club, the larger share will go to the winner. For Mr. Einsiedel to make the trip the expenses will amount to about £5O (says ‘Backmarker’’),' and he' is to be commended for his sportsmanship, as naturally he desired the match to take place in Melbourne. The victory of Almont Wilkes at the last Richmond meeting in the Flying Handicapagain brought the speedv Victorian';. pitcer into the limelight. From the 2.18 mark he had no trouble in getting over his mile in 2.15 J. This is slightly slower than his previous Richmond recofd. but still gpod time for a winter track. With Direct Home, : Walla. Walla « divides the honour of pacing a winning mile at Richmond in.2.12J. Almont Wilkes is n . good shddle horse; and possibly Mr.. Einsiedel will be accommodated by Sydney owners if he desires a match under these conditions. Last Race of Season.

The light harness event at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday will close the 1931-32 season; At an early date I will publish the usual statistical' returns; showing the order- of favouritism :of the winners throughout the season, and the various marks from which the winners started.

Itoyal Silk. Royal Silk is being prepared for spring engagements by J. Bryce, so should Itick nothing in condition when asked to race. VVitming Trainer and Horseman.

C. S. Donald- heads the list of winning trainers for the third time in succession, but the margin in his favour this season is small. M. , Holmes heads the list of reinsmen, closely followed by J. S. Shaw and W; J. Tomkinson. Holmes also head!ed the list last season.

Kaiute’s Return. A southern exchange' states: The forward showing of Katute at Addington on ah obviously Short preparation plquantly suggests that she wiU turn out a cheap mare at 20gns,, which she brought when sold ostensibly as a brood mate at Mr, R, M. Morten’s sale. She was believed to be in foal, but this can hardly be so at this late Stage. W. J. Tomkinsoh took her over only a week or two before the meeting, and in view of her good showing she will be prepared by him for the August meeting. Katutfe has prodticed a foal to Four Chimes; She is by Nelson Bingen out of Muricata; dam also of Tarnire and Ahuriri, and the promising filly Little Claire.
