STREET MEETINGS
Labour Party’s Application CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., appeared before the City Council last evening to make application on behalf of the Labour Representation Committee to re-con-tinue the holding of street meetings. Mr. Fraser said that during the recent period of tension in public feeling the council had decided to suspend all street meetings. In that the Labour Representation Committee concurred. They were fortunate in never having had any friction with the authorities, and hud always worked in harmony with the traffic officials and the police, and they had never had any trouble. They did not mind very much where the site was, but mentioned Garrett Street, Taranaki Street, and Dixon Street, as sites for meetings. Councillor H. A. Huggins said that the council had no .objection to the holding of such meetings, but they had acted on a strong memorandum from the Police Commissioner asking the council not to grant any permits for such meetings. . The Mayor stated that the matter would be taken into careful consideration.
