WINTER SHOW OPENED

New Zealand Exhibits BIG CROWD ATTENDS Results of Judging VALUE OF DISPLAYS The Official openins of the Winter Show was performed yesterday afternoon by the Mayor, Mr. T. €• A. Hislop. The attendance was good, but it fell a little below that of preceding years. It was a representative gathering, including members of the Government and Departments, and representatives from the Manufacturers’ Associations jn Aucaland, Christchurch, and Dunedin. - - Mr CL J. B. Norwood, president of the Show Association, who presided, apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Prime Minister, Kt Hon.. G. W. ’ Forbes,-and the Minister of Employment, the lit. Hon. J. G. Coates. • The Mayor, Mr. T. aA. Hislop, congratulated the members of the Show Association, and particularly the committee, upon their energy and initiative in carrying .forward the work of their organisation. In spite of the depression they had staged an exhibition of which they had every reason to be proud. The Mayor stressed the educational value of shows, which, he said, brought home to the people just what the country was capable of producing. He urg- - ed an increased patronage of local-made articles, and went on to say that there was a responsibility upon the manufacturers to supply the people with an article of good quality and price. 4 He was confident that could be done. ■ The main feature of the Winter Show this year is the display of New Zealandmade products, under the auspices of the Wellington Manufacturers’Association. Having regard to the depression and the economies which business ; firms have practised in every, direction, the response to the energetic efforts of the president, Mr. J. Abel, and the secretary, Mr. R. T, M. Edmonds, is most encouraging. New features Include an exhibition of flax and flax textiles a tanneries display, cleansing materials, : and fuel spirit cases made in New Zealand from New Zealand timbers. There ere also varied displays of woollen’ goods, machinery, home and office furnishing, the nurserymen’s art. gas and electrical appliances, and radio and musical instruments, etc. ' Technical Training. A feature, which appears in the general part of the Winter Show,-’ but which might be regarded as a valuable accessory to the manufacturers’ section, is the very fine display by pupils at the Wellington Technical College. The work of the carpentry, joinery, and cabinetmaking classes is particularly noteworthy. The art classes display under the guidance of 'Mr.. Nelson Isaac discloses some excellent talent in designing, poster and colour work, plaster modelling and drawing, and art metal work. z ■ " " . Another feature which should be a special attraction to women is the mannequin parade which has been organised under the direction of the Wei-,; lington Manufacturers’ Association for the display of New Zealand-made articles of wear. Aero Club’s Stand. Pride of place on the Wellington Aero Club’s stand is given to the pilot .tester machine, by which the pilot, who handles the controls as in an ordinary machine, is able to see himself fly.’Coloured photographs of famous aviators, a model of RlOl, and examples of Gipsy and Monosoupape engines, and a Waco glider are other features of the stall. ' On another stand shared by the New Zealand Air League, the Wellington Gliding Club, and the Wellington Model Aeroplane Club,'the Stellin gift glider is the central feature of a display, which includes a large number of model aircraft.
