SCIENTIST’S DEATH

Professor J. W. Gregory London, June 14. News has been received that Professor John Walter Gregory has been drowned in the Urubamba River, Northern Peru, while leading an expedition to study volcanic movements. The newspapers pay tributes to his scientific attainments and explorations in Africa and Australia. Professor Gregory, who held the Chair of Geology in the University of Glasgow, from 1904 to 1929, was born in 1864, and did much travelling for geological purposes. In 18S7 he became an assistantin the Geological Department of the British Museum, and after having been Director of the Civilian Scientific Staff of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1901 he became Professor of Geology and Mineralogy in the University of Melbourne. From 1902 to 1904 he was Director of Geological Survey in Victoria. He left there in 1904 to go to Glasgow. He had been president of the Geological • Section ofthe British Association and also of the Geographical Section. From 1928 to 1930 he was president of the Geological Society. He held numerous fellowships and received the Victoria Medal' of the Royal Geographical Society of 1919, the Bigsby Medal and gold medal of the Scottish Geographical Society in 1922, and the Gallois Medal in 19‘M He visited the Rocky Mountains, British East Africa. Lake Eyre. Cyrenaica, Southern ■ Ango’n. and Chinese Tibet on various expeditions.
