Onions and Potatoes Scarce WELLINGTON QUOTATIONS With onions and potatoes scarce prices have finned at the Wellington markets during the past week. Owing to the drought and frosts potato crops in the South Island have been very poor this season, and in many cases plots that yielded 10 tons to the acre last season have not produced more than 2} tons this year. South Island Sutton’s Supreme were quoted ye'sterday from £B/5/- to £B/10/per ton, ex store. Last week they were quoted at £B. The price of South Island Dakotas is £8 to £B/10/- per ton. North Island Sutton’s Supreme are quoted at £7/15/-. There has been an average increase of 15/- per ton for all varieties. Onions, which are in short supply, are likely to increase still further in price. Yesterday they were quoted at 16/6 to 17/6 per cental bag, ex store. Late rates are ruling for grain and other produce. The following prices are quoted by Laery and Co., Ltd., net on rail, Wellington:—Barley: Milled, 5/- per bushel; English feed, clipped, 4/-; ten sack lots, 3/10. Barleymeal: Half-ton lots or over, £6 pel l ton of 20001 b. Bran: Half-ton lots or over, £5/10/- per ton of 20001 b. Chaff: G. 8.0.5. ton lots, £7/5/- per ton; less than ton lota, 7/9 per cwt. Chaff: Wheaton straw, £6 per ton. Maize: Whole, ten sack lots or over, 6/3 per bushel; less than 10 sack lots, 6/6; crushed, Australian or South African, 5/6 per bushel. Oats: Australian machine-dressed and clipped Algerians, ten sack lots or over, 4/6 per bushel; dressed Duns, 5/-; black oats, 4/6; Gartons, 4/2 to 4/3; less than ten sack lots, 2d. bushel extra. Australia’s Onion Supplies (Rec. June 15, 7 p.m.) Sydney, June 15. As a result of the shortage of onions in Victoria and the high prices for New Zealand, Sydney dealers are inquiring elsewhere for supplies. A shipment from Japan is expected in the near future. The landed cost of these, including duties and exchange, will be equivalent to £22 per ton. Agents are now rescreening unsold stocks from New Zealand and getting £22 for picked lots.
