MANOR PARK BRIDGE

Work Well Advanced Work is now well advanced toward the re-erection of the Stokes Valley-Hay-wards bridge, which was washed away by the Hutt River floods at Easter of last year. At yesterday's meeting of the Hutt Comity Council it was reported that the woorjju towers at each side had been completed, and the cables were across in readiness for the balance of the work. It was anticipated that the bridge would be completed within another fortnight.

PRIEST FAREWELLED

Presentation to Rev. Father Quealy The Rev. Father I’. Quealy, of Petone, who is leaving on a holiday trip, during the course of which he will attend the Eucharistic Congress in Dublin, was farewelled by his parishioners recently. He was presented with a leather' suitcase, a set. of brushes, a well-filled wallet, and a photograph of the church at Petone. The presentation was made by Mr. A. Coles, who, on behalf of the parishioners, paid a tribute to the work Father Quealy had done in Petone over the last 18 years. He wished him a pleasant trip and a happy return. Priests representing other Wellington parishes were present, and joined with the people of Petone in their felicitations.

TECHNICAL SCHOOL

Report to Petone Board

The principal of the Petone Technical High’ School, Mr. A. McFadyen, reported at the monthly meeting of the board that at the end of March, 1932, enrolments amounted to 262, as against 174 for the corresponding month last year. Of this total 124 were girls and 138 .were boys. Since the beginning of the year four girls and six boys bnd left. Part-time classes in - the school during the day consisted of 241 primary school girls in 11 classes for cookery, and 249 primary school boys in 11 classes for woodwork. Enrolments for the evening classes were 279, as against 242 for March last year. The total comprised 132 free place and 147 paying pupils in 40 classes. Girl's numbering 11 entered for the certificate of the Royal Life-Saving Society and all were successful. Two gained bronze medallions, five gained proficiency •' certificates, and four gained elementary certificates. The appointment of Mr. Alexander Riddolls for engineering subjects and Mr. W. A. Ritchie for academic subjects were announced. It was stated that arrangements were in hand for the winter sports, football for the boys and basketball and hockey for the girls.

Results from a sale of produce provided by the pupils of the school and others were very satisfactory. Thanks were extended to Mesdames Aitchison, Scott. McKenzie, and McFadyen. who were in charge of the produce stall, and also to Messrs. Neill and Scott for assistance.

HUTT VALLEY SCHOOLS

Nominations for Committee

Although nine nominations were required for Petone Central School Committee, only five were received. The names arc as follow :—J. Ash, F. Hewson, H. Hepworth. J. Ritehards, and J. Dow. The following are the nominations for the Petone West School Committee: —A. G. Steffensen, B A. Sargisson, S. B. Townsend. M. F. Nicholls, and E. J. O’Brien. The first four are members of the present committee. There were only five nominations, when nine were expected. Nominations for the Randwick School Committee are:—H. BaldwiiuH. A. Wilson. B. N. Wansbrough. S. Pointer, J. H. Dunn. A. Douglas, A. Mead, W. E. Daley, and A. Wenson.
