CITY RESERVES
Cost of Extra Work RAID ON DISTRICT FUND ‘“That special expenditure incurred, in connection with sports meetings held on city reserves be met out of the proceeds of each meeting before the council’s percentage of the gate takings Is paid into the district fund,” was a recommendation made by the Reserves Committee at the council meeting last evening. The Mayor pointed out that by following such a procedure the committee was increasing its estimates at the expense of the district fund. The effect of this was that the committee would be getting something in excess of what was provided for in the usual way. Councillor F. Meadowcroft said that such was not altogether the case, as this only provided for special expenditure as in the case of the South AfricaNew Zealand cricket match. The Mayor said that there were always such little extras every year. It was only a way of digging a little more out of the district fund. If it were allowed he did not know where it would end. If it were passed it would be a precedent, and It would mean that a good deal of the district fund would go. Councillors W. H. Bennett and J. Burns supported the clause, but Councillor H. A. Huggins pointed out it would throw them out in their bookkeeping. The Mayor moved that the clause be referred back to the committee. This was defeated by 7 votes to 5. The Mayor then moved as an amendment that the matter be referred to the City Treasurer for a report before any further action be taken. This was carried on the voices.
