REPAYMENT LOAN
Palmerston N. Negotiations OVER £152,000 INVOLVED Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, April 8. The Palmerston North City Council recently made an application to the Local Loans Board for its sanction to raise a repayment loan of £152,787. The board sanctioned the raising of a loan of £152,750 for a term of 10 years at 5j per cent., with a sinking fund of 2 per cent., subject to certain conditions. The mayor, Mr. A. E. Mansford, interviewed the Minister of Finance in regard to the rate of interest being raised from 5J to 5i per cent., the latter being the rate at which an assurance society was prepared to advance the full amount, and also in regard to the board’s decision that the debentures in connection with the loan should be domiciled in the Dominion and not in Australia. The Mayor announced to-day that in response to further negotiations he had received a reply which was considered satisfactory, and which would be placed before the council at its next meeting. FURNITURE STOLEN
Sold to Dealer Masterton, April 8. “This man has been convicted before, but I feel inclined to give him another chance,” observed Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court this morning, when convicting Norman Woods of the theft of a bedstead, a washstand and sundry other articles, the property of Eva Gladys Haxton. It was stated that the furniture had been left in Woods’s care by Mrs. Haxton and he had sold it along with some of his own. "Woods was placed on probation for a period of two years, ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, and also to make a refund of £1 to the second-hand dealer to whom the furniture was sold. An order was made for the return of the stolen property to the owner. CLOSER SETTLEMENT Norsewood Block Suggested Dannevirke, April 8. A recommendation recently made by the Dannevirke County Council that the Rakautatalii block, in the Norsewood district, should be acquired by the Government for closer settlement, was again before the council at its meeting yesterday. ! Councillor A. B. Hansen said nothing had been heard from the Minister of 1 Lands in connection with the matter, and suggested that the question should 1 again be brought before the Minister. ! The chairman (Mr. J. Peters) and ’ Councillors A. B. Hansen and S. OTAKI NOTES A bolting horse, dragging in its wake a load of firewood. caused excitement in tlie town yesterday. After unseating the driver, and narrowly missing some veranda posts, the animal turned into Main Street, where it. was brought to a standstill by running into a fence. A car was missed by inches. Half a ton of potatoes was stolen on Thursday from u shed on the property cf Mr. E. R. Gawler, of Te Hero. The Otakl Surf Chib met last night., when a balance-sheet in connection with the recent coinpet.itions was presented bv the secretary. Mr. Witehell. \ very satisfactory state of affairs was 'disclosed, and a vole of appreciation was passed to Mr. Witehell lor his good work.
