Swimming Championships 220 YARDS RECORD BROKEN The preliminary heats for the New Zealand University swimming championships were decided in the Tepid Baths on Saturday morning. Good times were registered, D. H. Symes, of Canterbury, establishing a new university record of 2min. 41 2-ssec. for the 220 yards. ■■l 1 . Following are the results:— 50 Yards Women’s Championship.—First heat: Miss T. Levvey (C.U.C.), 1; Miss E. Steele (A.U.C.), 2. Time, 34 l-ssec. Miss Levvey led from the start. Misses Steele and N. Webber (V.U.C.) fought hard for the second place, which Miss Steele won by a' touch. Second heat: Miss J. Thomson (A.U.C.), 1; Miss R. Collins (C.U.C.), 2. Time, 34 l-ssec. Miss Thomson led all the way, swimming easily. 100 Yards Men’s Championship.—First heat: D. H. Symes (C.U.C.), 1; T. V. Fitzpatrick (A.U.C.), 2. Time, 66sec. Symes had no difficulty In winning this event. Fitzpatrick finished swimming well, but could not make up on the Canterbury man’s lead. Second heat: G. A. Rix-Trott (A.U.C.), 1; N. L. Herrick (C.U.C.), 2. Time, 66 2-ssec. Rix-Trott took the lead from the start and made the pace willing. The final of this event will prove interesting. • 66 2-3 Yards Women’s Breaststroke.— First heat: Miss N. Webber (V.U.C.), 1; Miss R. Collins (C.U.C.), 2. Time, 01 2-ssec. Miss Webber led well from the start and finished swimming with an easy stroke. Second heat: Miss J. Thomson (A.UiC.), 1; Miss G. Rankin (C.U.C.), 2. Time, 62sec. Misses Thomson and Rankin fought hard fr>r first place. The Aucklander, however, managed to maintain her short lead throughout. 220 Yards Men’s Championship.—First heat: D. H. Symes (C.U.C.), 1; S. J. Clark (0.U.), 2, Time, 2min. 41 2-ssec —record. Symes led from the start, Clark and Fitzpatrick (A.U.C.) swimming nearly level for two laps. Clark increased his lead on Fitzpatrick, but could not make on Symes, who finished easily, his time being 2min. 41 2-bsec., an N.Z.U. record. Second heat: G. Rix-Trott (A.U.C.), 1; J. Bly th (0.U.), 2. Time, 2mln. 45 l-ssec. The Aucklander led all the way and finished swimming strongly. Blyth led by a yard from Herrick (C.U.C.) and increased this lend after the third lap. TOO Yards Men’s Breaststroke.—First heat: F. Ansell (A.U.C.), 1; H. Tremewan (V.U.C.), 2. Time, 92 3-ssec. Ansell led by about three yards from Tremewan, the only other starter, and finished with about the same lead. Second heat: W. Platts (0.U.) 1: W. I. Gunn (A.U.C.), 2. Time, 85 2-ssec. Flatts led, Gunn and Archibald (V.U.C.) fighting to the finish for second place. Gunn won it by a touch. TOO Yards Women’s Championship.— First heat: Miss J. Thomson (A.U.C.), 1; Miss'R. Collins (C.U.C.), 2. Miss Thomson finished swimming strongly. Second heat: Miss E. Steele (A.U.C.), 1; Miss Y. Levvey (C.U.C.). 2. Miss Steele finished swimming nearly as strongly as she started. Miss Levvey just maintained her slight lead on Miss Webber (V.U.C.) to finish second, swimming well. The finals will be held at the tepid baths this evening.

TENNIS TOURNAMENT Preliminary Results The preliminary rounds of the University tennis tournament were played on the Miramar Grounds courts on Saturday. The finals will be played to-morrow. It is probable that the men’s singles final will be between H. A. Barnett (C.U.C.) and R. McL. Ferkins (V.U.C.) and that the women’s singles will be between Miss Calver (0.U.) and Miss R. Taylor (A.U.C.). The following are the detailed results: Men's Singles. First round: H. A. Barnett (C.U.C.) beat O. Chapman (0.U.), (I—l. 6 —2; J. J. McCarthy (V.U.C.) beat J. E. Stedman (A.U.C.), o—6, G—3, 6—l; J. 11. Griffiths (C.U.C.) beat T. Macallan (0.U.), 6—o. 11 —9; K. McL. Ferkins (V.U.C.) beat C. G. Bowden (A.U.C.), £—2, 6—l. Men's Doubles. First round: H. A. Barnett and 11. S. P. Andrews (C.U.C.) won by default; J. E. Stedman and J. P. Glenle (A.U.C.) beat .T. B. Black and G. S. Simpson (V.U.C.), 6—l, o—2; W. B. Gosnell and J. J. McCarthy (V.U.C.) beat C. G. Bowden and T. 11. Wilson (A.U.C.), 6—2, B—3; B. A. Barren and E. H. Adkins (C.U.C.) beat T. Macallan and B. Blunden (0.U.), 6—2, 6—2. Semi-finals: Barnett and Andrews beat Stedman and Glenle, 6—l, 4—6, 6—3; Barter and Adkins beat Gosnell and McCarthy. 6—3, I—6, 6—2. Women's Singles. First round: Miss L. Kobertson (A.U.C.) beat C. Dickson (C.U.C.), 6 —3, 6—l; Miss G. Calver (0.U,) beat Miss V. Dyer (V.U.C.), 6—4, 6-4!; Miss M. H. Line (V.U.C.) beat M. Howden (0.U.). 6 —l, 6—3; Miss R. Taylor (A.U.C.) beat Miss G.
