Inter-Varsity Tournament FRIENDLY RIVALRY Bight-oar Race to Canterbury AUCKLAND WINS BOXING A uniformly high standard of performance was maintained on Saturday. when the twenty-eighth annual New Zealand inter-University tournament opened in Wellington. The competitions included the eightoared race, which was won by the Canterbury crew by three and a half lengths from Auckland, with Wellington a length and a half away. The boxing competitions were held at' the Winter Show Stadium throughout the day, the finals being decided in the evening. Here again the competitors proved that they were not only In the pink of physical condition, but that they had been well tutored in the art of self-defence. Auckland took the honours with three championships to Otago’s two, Canterbury and Victoria College having to be content with one each. Other competitions, commenced on Saturday included the swimming events at the tepid baths, and the tennis preliminaries on the Miramar courts. Yesterday’s programme included a special communion service at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral In the morning, and a service at the Congregational Church In the evening, followed by a performance of the religious ■ play, "Eager-Heart,” which was presented by members of the V.U.C. S.C.M., in conjunction with the Terrace Congregational Choir. To-day’s competitions will include the athletic championships at the Basin Reserve, basketball at the Technical College courts, and the swimming finals at the tepid baths this evening. The tennis finals will be played at Miramar to-morrow morning, and the tournament will conclude with a ball in the Masonic Hall to-morrow evening.
