SEA SCOUTS’ REGATTA

Nelson Secures Two Wins ROWING AT WELLINGTON The annual Sea Scouts’ rowing regatta was held at Port Nicholson on Saturday, when troops from Nelson, Lyttelton, Petone and YVellington competed for the Aorangi and Washbum Cups. There were among the spectators representatives from the Hawke Troop, Auckland, the Sunshine Troop. Auckland, and the Wanganui Troop. The cotfrse selected for the day was from Point Halswell to Clyde Quay Wharf and the Star Boating Club’s two whale-boats were used. Excellent, arrangements had been made for the contests' and each race was run to time. . Crews from the Iron Duke Troop, NtJson, won both cups. Captain J. Spence, harbourmaster, in presenting the cups in the afternoon, congratulated the competitors on the splendid seamanship which each crew showed in handling the boats. Results are as follow:— Aorangi Cup. Heats. —Britannia No. ;2 (YVellington) defeated Lytton by two lengths. Time, 9min. 53scc. Port Nicholson (Wellington) defeated Britamiia No. 1 by half a length. Time, 9min. sscc. Iron Duke (Nelson) defeated .Collingwood (YVellington) by two lengths. Time, 9min. 24sec. Petone, a bye. Semi-finals. —Port Nicholson (Wellington) defeated Britannia No. 2 (YVellington) by four lengths. Time, 9.17. Iron Duke (Nelson) defeated Petone by two lengths. Time, 9.31. Final. —Iron Duke (Nelson) defeated Port Nicholson (Wellington) by half a length. Time, 9.24. The final race caused a high pitch of excitement and the. result was; in doubt until the crews crossed the winning line. Nelson ,who drew the outside course, was first to break away, and, with a steady pull, drew ahead. Wellington, half-way hottie, managed to draw level and hung on until within a hundred yards of the post, where both crews lengthened their stroke. Nelson was just a little too good and crossed half , a length ahead, but in the excitement bore over and struck the Wellington boat. A protest was lodged, but after a meeting of the committee, was not upheld, the reason given being that the result of the race was not affected. Washburn Cup. Heats.—lron Duke (Nelson) defeated Lytton by four lengths. Time, 8.59. Collingtonwood (Wellington) defeated Petone by twenty lengths. Time, 8.50. Final.—lron Duke (Nelson) defeated Collingwood (YVellington) by three lengths. Time, 8.51. Nelson won after a strenuous tussle. Both crews broke water together, but Nelson, with a longer stroke, gradually pulled ahead. Nearing the finishing line YVellington spurted, but could not make up the leeway on Nelson, who crossed the line three lengths ahead.
