THE RACING WORLD

EASTER HOLIDAY MEETINGS

Backers’ Severe Reverses at Ellerslie GREAT EASTER HANDICAP TO-DAY Nightmarch Wins Weight-for-age Race at Randwick Easter racing was in full swing throughout the Dominion on Saturday, when with few exceptions the principal races resulted in big surprises. ' At Auckland the Easter Handicap was won by the Riccarton gelding Great Star, who was seventh in order of favouritism, from an even bigger outsider, Lady Quex. The Auckland filly Speedmint won the Great Northern Oaks. Ttye Champagne Stakes, for two-year-olds, was won by the Taranaki colt Gaine Carrington in a very close finish. At Feilding Gold Dawn, an outsider, won the Manchester Handicap, and Acora the sprint.' Two favourites in Arikira and Paganelll won. the principal events at the Wairarapa meeting. At Riverton the Gold Cup was won by Ruling Light.and Ravine won the principal event at Greymouth. i At Randwick Nlghtmawh won the weight-for-wage event from two other New Zealanders in Veilmond and Second Wind, but Ammon Ra was again defeated by Middle Watch in the St. Leger Stakes. The little-fancied lightweight Jacko won the Doncaster Handicap, and Kuvera again proved himself the best two-year-old by winning the Sires’ Produce Stakes.

AUCKLAND RESULTS Bad Day for Backers OUTSIDERS IN MONEY Great Star Wins Easter Dominion Special Service. Auckland, March 26. The Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting opened to-day in fair weather before a good attendance. The totalisator investments were £34,045, compared with £48,800/10/- on the first day last year, a decrease of £14,755/10/-. A Big Surprise. Antique and Gibraltar headed a wide range of fancies in the President’s Handicap, but although both ran good races they were both outside a place. Royal Doulton was slow away, Jaeldy Karo leading in the early stages, but Criachan, Taneriri and then,King’s Archer took charge in turn, -the last-named s going clear at the top to have a good dead at the turn from Taneriri, Alloy, (Cruachan and Gibraltar. King’s Archicr went on to win comfortably from Gay 'Cockade, with Awaken, Gibraltar, Llan'ore, Antique and JaeJdy Karo all in a hunch next. It would have been a wonderful finish with the winner out. In such a big field fbe top-weights were well up against it, but Antique, Taneriri and Star Stranger all ran fine races. Awaken con'd not get clear early, but she came home in great style. First and second horses both paid good dividends. Favourite Wins Oaks. Speedmint was better fancied than Fast Passage in the Great Northern Oaks. The favourite won, while Fast Passage could not raise a gallop after going half a mile and she tailed right off to be pulled obviously a sick filly. Grand Review and Lady Musk made the early running, but six furlongs from home Speedmint went up to Grand Review, and, going dear at the turn, she won decisively from Limeen, who came on to beat Flower and Exaggeration in the run home. The winner showed herself to be a solid and consistent filly,' and Limeen ran her best-race for some time. Winner Jumps Well. Lucess and Wiltshire were most fancied for the Brighton Hurdles, which was a tine race. Kinsel fell at the first, fence, and Kairuri was pulled up lame.at the stands. Claremore, Biform. Patutahi and Luminary always comprised the leading division. Claremore was beaten at the halfmile, and Patutahi led round the turn from Luminary, Biform and Lucess. Then, in a hard finish. Luminary did best to win well ■ from Patutahi and Luecss, with Biform and Copey close up. Luminary was well handled by Mcßae, and his. fencing was better than that-.of Patutahi and Biform. either of whom might have won. Biform was not ridden with the best judgment and he is a promising hurdler. Lucess ran a good race that he will improve on, and Copey came from a long way back to finish just outside a place. Willshire went badly throughout. Great Star’s Easter. Huntingdon and Huntnng Cry headed b tine pool on the Easter Handicap, but once again outsiders paid the dividends. After Huntingdon and Lady Quex bad jumped away best Pomp and Great Star took charge, the latter going clear at the five furlongs to lead into the straight from Lady Quex, Hunting Cry, Persham. Chief Jewel, Huntingdon and Pomp. Then Lady Quex went after the leader, and Sunny Sky and Persham also joined >ii. but- . Great Star hung on in great style to.win i/v a head. Sunny Sky was a close third, with Persham. Huntingdon. Sil-, vermine and Pomp right up. - The winner put up a slashing performance. as he made nearly all the pace. Lady Quex was at a wonderful price, and rail the best race over a mile she has ever shown here. Sunny Sky finished better than anything in the race after coining from well back. Persham and Huntingdon ran good races, but the latter just, failed to see it out. Aristis, Golden Wings, Puriri Park, and Chrysology. the last-named in particular, all received very bad passages in the big field. A Close Finish. Midinette and Tea Trader were the best hacked in the Champagne Stakes, but again backers went astray. Tea Trader was first to break the line, and lie was closely attended by Ln Modcme and Midinette. Leaving the five fur-' longs Tea Trader went out. three lengths clear and he was elear at the turn, but ran wide and Midinette shot through on the rails to take charge. She looked p winner at, the distance, but then Gaine' Carrington and Inflation came fast, fbe trio going over the line with beads between them, and Tea Trader fourth. Midinette and Tea Trader both showed great speed, but the dividend payers both finished in slashing style from the turn and both are good colts. Nassoek’s Steeplechase. King’s Counsel ami Nassock were fairly evenly backed in the Mahgerc Steeplechase, and after a pretty race they paid the dividends. Dominican, Neil mid Nassock were always the leading division, and on I he hill the last time Neil. Dominican. Nassock. King's Counsel and Town Beauty were all in clow order. In a hard race home Nassock beat King's Counsel by a neck, with Neil and Town Beauty close up. ; The winner covered more ground than anything in the race, and he should jmake a good ’chaser. An Improved Youngster. Courtyard was n hot favourite for the Onslow Stakes, with the Greek Gold —Holly Lu bracket also in demand, j Courtyard and Miss Lorraine led Impudent to the turn, where Greek Gold, iwho lost a Little ground at the start, had moved up fourth. Greek Gold jtaekled Courtyard at the last fnrlonx ,

post and beat him decisively, with Impudent a fair third and Senorita, Holly Lu and Miss Lorraine next. The winner improved on his second at Paeroa to, win well. Courtyard ran a good race, and Impudent also made a surprisingly good showing, but Miss Lorraine failed badly in the run home. Anotiter Outsider. Good betting on tbc Eden Handicap saw Monarchy and Karangapai heading the pool, but another outsider turned vp in Ruby Dawn. Lord Vai, Grand Spirit, Good Idea and Teels were always prominent after the first two furlongs, and they were attended at the turn ■ by Psychologist and Hit the Deck. Lord Vai was in front at the distance, when Ruby Dawu came with a rattle to win going away, with Psychologist third and Grand . Spirit, Good Idea, and Hit the Deck all close up. Monarchy was disappointing, but Teels covered a lot of ground after drawing well out, and she may improve. ! Results in Detail Bv Telegraph.—Press Association. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP, of 350 sow. A FIRST-CLASS COLT (By “The YY’alehcr.”) YY’hile the defeat of Midinette in the Great: Northern Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday was unexpected the win of Gaine Carrington was no surprise. This colt, who is a iuilf-brother by Hunting Song to Peter Jacks,on. and runs in the same interests, started racing only last January at YVellington. where he followed up an unsuccessful start with a win the next day. At Te Arohn he was second and first, and at Trenthain this month he was second to Midinette in the Pacific Handicap and fourth in the North Island Challenge Stakes, in this race he lost ground at the start, and was ridden with very poor judgment, subsequently being rushed up to the front at the end of a furlong. As the class was the best he appeared to have very good prospects of giving Midinette a stern contest for the honours on Saturday, and his win indicates that he must rank as one of the leading two-year-olds of the year. The Champagne winner is usually regarded as the potential Derby colt, and while there arc still some classic events to be decided in which ho may run and even meet, defeat. Gaine Carrington is d’stinctly the logical selection, on form, plus breeding (he is out of a Martian mare) for next season's blue ribnnd.

ARIKIRA EASILY .Chief Race at Wairarapa PAGANELLI’S SPRINT Ellis Rides Three Winners (By "The Watcher.”) Cold threatening weather did not assist \ toward the success of the opening day of the Wairarapa Easter meeting at JTauherenikau on Saturday. There were showers during the afternoon, but Jhe rain was insufficient to interrupt [proceedings or alter the state of the going. The attendance was below usual for an Easter Saturday, but nevertheless .there was a good crowd present. 'Four five-horse fields and one three-horse contest figured on the day’s card, which [was unfortunate from the club’s point jof view, but there was teen and interesting racing. . Favourites began the day well by securing the first four races, but they were defeated in the balance of the events. .Under the circumstances the turnover .of £B7Ol was satisfactory. Last year the meeting had to be postponed from the Saturday and Monday to the Monday and Tuesday owing to floods, so that a comparison of days should be made between Saturday this year and Tuesday of last year. There was an increase in the attendance, but the totalisator decline was £2504. Under present circumstances this is satisfactory. A feature of the day’s racing was the really excellent starting of Mr. 11. E. Connop. , A. E. Ellis rode three winners and ’ K. Voitre two. . /• ' . Favourite Wins. Paganelli, a warm order in the fivefiorse sprint, was ridden to the front at the. end of a furlong and was clear of Arvada. Imperial Fame and Equitant .when settled down, with Cimabue tailing off. Equitant slipped up on the rails approaching the straight and challenged Paganelli in the run homo, but was unable to overhaul him, although she made him do his best. Imperial Fame •was a moderate third, with Cimabue further back just heading off. Arvada, Paganelli was made to do it all the ■way, and was stopping at the finish, but there was nothing good enough in ;the field to beat him. The race should improve Cimabue. The winner now races in the colours of his trainer,. M. J. Carroll. Miladi in Form. . Miladi’s form was so superior to that of her opponents in the hack sprint that backers’ had no hesitation in making her a red-hot favourite, and' she wou (Without much difficulty. Araios, Wnratah and Foulwind were an front of her early, but she moved up approaching th</ straight and headed for the post on terms with Waratah. Waratah hung on for a while, but MiUadi shook him off and won comfortably. ,Foulwind —was" a”moderate third, and White Squhll fourth. Miladi outclassed her opponents. Arlkira’s Easter Handicap. Arikira was made a solid 'favourite for the Easter Handicap. He was not prominent early, but moved up approaching the straight and once he 'made Sis run he was complete master of the situation. Green Patch led the bunch out of the] straight, . but Chopin had charge when

settled down from Green Patch, Imatcagirl and Foghorn, then Stanchion. Joie de Vai, Arikira and Malahat. Chopin and. Imateagirl led into the straight from Arikira and Joie de A al. Once Arikira made his run he soon settled the leaders and scored easily from Malahat, who finished with a good run to beat Joie de Vai for second. Imateagirl was fourth, followed by Green Patch, Chopin, and Foghorn, with Stanchion last. Arikira was ridden with great confidence by Ellis and it can be said that the issue was never in doubt. The slow early pace also suited him under his weight. Joie de Vai ran a creditable race after drifting back in the middle stages, but outside the winner Malahat’s was the best showing as he camo from a long way back. Stanchion faile'd to show any form and the others had every chance. Improved Two-year-old. The Nursery Handicap fell to the favourite, Headmaster. He lay in behind the leaders. Sir Pombal, Mister Quex and Cockpen, to the straight, then, securing an opening, he came on to score a decisive win and pay an “acceptable price. Cockpen paid double figures for ’second, there being only £l6/10/- on hischance. He was always there and ran much better than his stable-mate, Late Jest. Mister Quex* was fancied and ran prominently, but had every chance. The unlucky runner was the well-backed second favourite, Clangor. He was hampered in the early running, but even then may have won had he been fortunate enough to continue his run home, on the rails, but he got badly checked and finished sixth. Headmaster has not done much racing. He was beaten at Rangitikei early in the month, but has cbme on a Jot since. Wasteland and Sir Ponabal were prominent early, but did not run on. Lapse of Form. Lyrical, hot favourite Tor the back mile, failed badly. She had drifted back at the end of half a mile, and 'never looked a possibility; nor did there appear any excuse for her. The others ran bunched to the straight, and the issue resolved itself into a duel'between 'Appledore and Kalmuk. Appledore was the winner till the closing stages, when Kalmuk just wore him down. Capetown was a poor third, just heading off Thrasher. Johneen broke down’badly entering the straight, and pulled up. It transpired that he broke a hind leg, and he was 'destroyed. > : Lyrical’s lapse from grace was a facer for backers,'and she was never going well except, for a furlong or so. With her opposition eliminated it was an easy race to win, and there was not much merit 'in the form. Johneen was up in front when he went out, and it looked as if he would have won. Equitant Improves. Only three horses went, to the post in the .Martinborough Handicap, but they were'all well backed. Arajeon made the pace from Make Up and Equitant. Make Up cut .down the leader in the straight, but Equitant challenged. and won fairly comfortably nt the finish. The winner looked a 'good wager after her finishing effort against Paganelli in. the first race. Make Up had every chance, but Equitant wore him down. 'A Winning Bracket. 1 Mr. J. J. Corry's luck turned % the hack seven furlongs, when he supplied •both the winner and runner-up, Revision •and Projection, and got a handsome price on the machine. The top of the handicap were all well backed. Holly Holm being actual favourite. Revision and Eminent led early, and-later were joined, by Projection, and they led 'into the straight to fight out the issue. Eminent, hung on till the last half furlong, but his effort was spent, and 'Mr. Corry’s pair had a keen 'struggle’ 5 for the ’honours. Tiady ionnld was fourth, followed by Gold Sand, Holly Holm and Emotion.

Revision was always there, but Projection made up some ground early. Eminent was always prominent, and ran well. He had an apprentice up with a 51b. allowance, and it is no disparagement to say he would probably have won for a strong horseman. Lady Ronald finished better than any of the other well-backed runners. Weatherstep was last all the way, and her brilliant track wdrk contrasts vividly with her poor'public displays. Favourite Unlucky. On form King Thomond was justifiably a warm favourite for the five-horse maiden event that concluded the programme, but he was beaten by the Irish importation Mullaboden. Mullabodon won well, but it looked as if Voitre on King Thomoud took his opponents too cheaply. At any rate, he asked his mount a severe question from the straight entrance, and found Mullaboden holding jilst too much of 'an advantage. The other three were outclassed. The winner has done very little racing, but, he showed some speed at Trentham, and he is.apparently coming on. Details of the Racing NEWMARKET HANDICAP, of 125 sovs., second 30, third 45. NIGHTMARCH WINS

A.J.C.’s Autumn Stakes RANDWICK MEETING Defeat of Ammon Ra (Rec. March 27, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney. March 26. The A.J.C-. autumn meeting opened at Randwick on Saturday. There was fine weather, an excellcut track, and a large attendance. . . Nightmarch proved that his brief respite from racing had not impaired his galloping ability by winning the well-en-dowed All Aged Stakes in a convincing manner from a smart field. Kuvera enjoyed an easy victory m the Sires’ Produce Stakes, and appears to be the season’s best colt. Jacko, who liithertoitivas capable only of winning in novice company, won the Doncaster in hollow fashion from a field which included some of Australia’s best milers. Ammon Ra was again compelled to take second place to Middle Watch, who defeated him in the Victorian Leger. Ammon Ra appeared to have the race in safe keeping at the Leger, but Middle Match, by a well-timed run, gathered him m with two lengths ‘to spare. Easter meeting. She ran third during the afternoon in the Easter Handicap at Tauherenikau and her showing encouraged her connections to make the Riccarton trip for the Great Autumn Handicap. Joie de Vai was left out of the telegraphed list oC acceptors for the mile and a half race. K. Voitre had been engaged to ride her. but on the nonappearance of her name he accepted the ride on Jaloux. Prior to leaving the course at Tuuherenikau on Saturday Mr. Simpson stated that he would insist on Voitre keeping his engagement to ride his mare.

FEILDING MEETING

Gold Dawn’s Surprise SPRINT TO ACORA Another Win for Aston (By Telegraph—From “Poneke.”) Feilding. March 26. Patrons of the Feilding Easter meeting were treated to a really 7 good day s rac--ing to-day, the opening day. Bright sunshine prevailed, and the attendance was good. The course was fast. Form horses ran prominently, but there were some surprise results, notably in the two chief events, which were wou by Gold Dawn and' Accra. The meeting will be concluded to-day. Favourites Prevail. Just an Idea and Arrowhead monopolised betting in the Kawakawa Hurdles to such an extent that they carried over half the investments. The betting was not misguided, for the pair dominated the field and paid the dividends. ' Callapat made most of the running. Over the last part of the race he was joined by Henry of Navarre, Just an Idea and Arrowhead were lying close behind the leaders on the home turn, and in the straight Just an Idea drew away and won very 7 easily by a neck from Arrowhead. Balloon finished well in third place, three lengths away, and Callapat was fourth. Banbridge fell five furlongs from home. Decisive- Win. Backed to odds-on and confidently ridden, the Gisborne hack Tai Ao comfortably won the Ongo Hack Handicap. The favourite lost ground at the start, but he was handy 7 to the leaders, Chief Savage and Haulbowline, turning into the straight, and from there more than held his own to win by three-quarters of a 'length from Alpinist, who was always prominent, and got the second decision over Tigerism, with whom she was bracketed. Gran Chaco finished fast in fourth place, close up. The winner was much superior to the rest of the field. He meets his opponents on much worse terms on Monday, but again should be hard to beat. Fairy Girl may have been in a place at the finish but for running very wide on the home turn. The Big Handicap. , Grand Jury was sent out a warm favourite for the Manchester Handicap, this ou the strength of his good form, at the Wellington meeting. Others well backed were King Colossus, Arrow Lad, Shrewd, and High Falutin. The result, luawever, was a surprise. King Colossus was taken to the front at the outset and was joined by Habit. They led out of the straight with Grand Jury 7 running outside them. Along the back and approaching the straight, King Colossus and Habit were the leaders from Grand Jury and Arrow Lad, while Gold Dawn was at the head of the others. Habit did not run on, and King Colossus was left in charge when the final run was undertaken. Gold Dawn and Grand Jury challenged. Gold Dawn headed King Colossus twenty yards off the post, and though King Colossus came again in the last few strides Gold Dawn won by a head. Grand Jury was only three-quarters of a length away third. High Falutin finished on in fourth place and next were Arrow Dad and Shrewd. The winner paid nearly double figures. The result indicated very 7 clearly .that King Colossus is returning to form. Grand Jury and Arrow Lad both - ran good races, but Habit dropped out very quickly 7 in the final furlong. The result did not clear the air a great deal regarding Monday’s principal event as Arrow Lad, King Colossus and Grand Jury all look sure to race well over the slightly shorter distance. Outsider Scores. ~ : After a fairly long delay the Maiden Stakes field went away to a rather ragged start. The chances of Farmer, who was heavily backed, and Thomist were extinguished at the outset as they failed to go off with the rest of the field. Beginning smartly from the outside of the line. Koreroa soon worked to the front. He led into the straight from Riotous, Midnight Echo and Pukepapa and ran oh to win without effort by two lengths from the favourite, Riotous, who was only 7 a neck in front of Midnight Echo, with Amyril fourth, then Pukepapa and Beaconsfield. If Amyril had not run off the course entering the straight she would have paid a dividend. This fact, and the confident backing for Farmer (who bails from a good stable) should not be overlooked on Monday. All the Way. 1 Fairway scored - an end-to-end victory in the Taonui Hack Handicap. He was followed to the straight by Seneschal, and in the last furlong drew away to win by three and a half lengths.: Seneschal -just scrambled in a head in front of Baskier, with Air Laddie finishing well another head away, and The Mirror. Chief Clerk and lago>ncxt. Fairway did not seem io be. troubled by the hard track, and in the finish .won going away. Souchong Beaten. Only four sprinters contested the Mangaone Handicap. Souchong was at odds-on, and the other three were evenly backed. , x . ~ Hampden did not go away with the others and was hopelessly left. . Souchong’s great burst of speed .carried him lengths clear of the other two by the time a couple of furlong had been covered. Accra was reducing the gap as the straight was reached. She had Souchong beaten halfway down the running and won by a length and a half. Souchong was five lengths clear of Consent. Hampden was badly left at the start. Promising Hack. Big backing came for Davistock in the Onepuhi Hack Handicap, but he failed to gain a place after being prominent most of the way. . ' Davistock was in charge running along the back. Turning for home Tentcall was the leader from Auctioneer, with Davistock next, and Decree Nisi , at the head of the others. Tentcall nnd Auctioneer were disputing the finish when Attentive came through and, finishing strongly, beat both of them. Attentive won by only half a neck (>'<>m Tentcall, with Auctioneer another halfneck awav third. Saltpot, Decree Nisi, Manawatu and Davistock followed. . _ There was a lot. of poor riding in this race, a fact which somewhat discounts the form. However, Attentive deserved his victory. _ He still gives promise of being a decidedly useful mid-dle-distance hack. The Open Seven. Aston led from end to end of the open seven-furlong race, the T-Talcombe Handicap, and lasted just long enough to win narrowly from Korokio. Paiearoa and Green Linnet were prominent behind the leader all the way. and nearing the straight Korokio and Nightmare wore handy. Korokio finished better than Aston, who, however, was a neck' to the good as the line ws crossed. Chief Cook, who was third, was a length nnd n half away, and Patoaroa and Green Linnctt finished almost in line with him.
