GOOD RELAY RACE

Visiting Athletes in Interesting Event

WIN FOR WELLINGTON

At was expected, the special relay race included in last evening's amateur athletic meeting at the Basin Reserve was one or the most interesting events of the , BC ® s f. u ’ It was a half-mile contest, in which the concluding lap of 110 yards was run by picked women competitors, Four teams took the field, and as it had been arranged by the Kiwi Amateur Athletic Club—vm sponsored the meeting—that southern athletes returning from the national championships would be present, the teams represented the provinces of WeUmgton, Canterbury and Otago. Some Wellington competitors were needed to fill out tne Otago team, but the others were entirely representative. Wellington won uiv event in Imin. 37 3-ssec.. , , n - The teams in this special relay were as follow: —Canterbury (scr.), T. G. Broadway, G. H. Hart, C. K. Gordon, and Miss K. Callin'an; Wellington (10yds.), J. UWatt, G. Hamilton, H. Marment, ami Miss T. Kench; Otago (15yds.), T. J? lcl;e V ing, H. McNeil, J. G. Barnes, Miss D. Hurley; Kiwi Club (15yds.), L. C- Veifeh, M. Furlong, H. Phillips, and Miss U. Millar. ' ./, , . „ The first lap went quickly, and was notable for the fine showing of Broadway and Watt. Pickering led Watt by perhaps two feet at the first change-over, v'/h Broadway nearly two yards away, followed closely bv Veitch. The opening quarter had put the teams on more or less even terms. When Hart and. Gordon had run the two next laps for Canterbury against the Wellington, men, Hamilton and Marment, Canterbury was about two yards ahead. Miss Kench started out about a yard and a half behind Miss Camnan. She worked into her stride quickly and passed the Canterbury girl about do yards from the tape. She was not extended. and won by about half a yard. Miss Millar, who had picked up some leeway, was about four yards away. The race was a good one, and drew applause from the comparatively small crowd who attended. A Good'Finish.

Of the other events the best was the 75 yards handicap, in which eight or nine runners started.' They finished almost m a line, and the judges had no easy task. First place went to C. G. Gordon, of Canterbury, with F. H. Stephenson, of Victoria College,, second. C. Gibbons, of Wellington, ran a praiseworthy mile—a welljudged effort which took him to the tape some yards ahead of the Canterbury miler, Sargeson. The Canterbury man lett tne impression that he could do much better on another day. Neither D. Phillips nor D. McGreevy had any great difficulty m winning their respective events, the. long jump and hop, step and jump. Rhe two Canterbury girls, Miss Nclligan and Miss Callinan, were too good for their opponents in the 100 yards handicap, P- N. Robinson, F. Blackett, G. Staveley and L. W- Sowerby were the best of the cyAn addition to the programme was the three-mile Victoria College championship event, which had been held over from the inter-faculty meeting on Saturday. 1! abian won it in good style, just as he won the mile at the ’Varsity meeting.
