RIFLE-SHOOTING*
C. J. Nix, Featherston, is Champion north island contest Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, December 29. The North Island championship rifle meeting concluded at Putiki rifle range, Wanganui, to-day, in ideal conditions. Marksmen from all over the North Island competed in the individual and teams events, which were all closely contested. Conditions were almost perfect yesterday and to-day, and shooting was on a par with that seen at the Dominion championships held at Trentham. Thirteen teams competed in the teams shoot, which was the most closely contested of all the events. Rifleman C. J. Nix, Featherston Club, won the North Island championship with a score of 333, Rifleman 11. W. Feast, Grey town, taking second place with 331, to be closely followed by Rifleman F. N. McVicar, Waipukurati, with a score of 330. For the qualifying aggregate the two former held score sheets showing totals of 286, Rifleman McVicar having a 282. Captain H. .Simmonds, of the Auckland City Club, returned a score sheet of 283, but Was displaced when he scored 46 in the final shoot to Rifleman McVicar’s 48, who thus rose to third place. Exceptional shooting was seen in the teams match, which was won by Petonc, the members of which were, W. McVicar, O. Donnell, R. 11. Nicholl, J. C. Carter and E. A. Ballinger. The possible for each man was lOu, and Petone rose from the mound with an average of 97.6, In the Manawatu match at 500 yards, two tyros, J. Sim, of Okawa, and R. Stuart, of Cheltenham, put on the possible, while R. Rock, New Plymouth, another tyro, was only one point behind, to fill third place. Rifleman H, C. Percy, of Alfrcdton. won the tyro aggregate with a score of 275. Rifleman C. J. Nix, winner of the championship, won ,tlie Mhrybunk aggregate.
