THE RACING WORLD
MANY SURPRISES Final Day at Awapuni SHREWD’S HANDICAP Aston Takes Sprint Easily (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) I ‘WtlttwaVAU Palmerston North, December 29. Tho summer meeting <sf the Minawa- ■ tu (lacing Club concluded at Awapuni to-day in line, warm weather. The attendance was not tip to the previous two days, but for an oft day it whs fair. Some keen and interesting racing was witnessed, including some upsets of form. Shrewd was one of the surprise winners of the day when lie scored in the principal handicap; and Billion’s success was another reverse for backers. On the other hand, Aston's Success in. the sprint eVent was well anticipated. The betting was not so brisk as on either of the two previous days, the total being £11,823/10/-, as against £20,549 on the third day last year, a decrease of £8726/10/-. The total for the thrte days was £51,746/10/-, com- / pared with £80,345 lafet teal', a decrease of £28,598/10/-. The track WaS again in first-clast! order and fast., Easterly’s Hurdles. Arrowhead, favourite for the hurdles, was decisively defeated by Easterly after he had been made free use of' out in front: he also, made one or two bad jumps, Easterly showed improved form compared with her display on the flat the previous day. Conjurer it. did not improve and Royal Songster, who looked likely for a good part of the journey/ faded right out. SpeatmisS was sOre and never likely. ’ Blacksmith Again. The apprentices’ race was won by . Blacksmith, 'who appears to have come right at last, Considering that Several Of the i'iclers were making their first appearance in public, they performed very creditably. At the same time some of the runners could, have done bettor With more experience 'in the saddle, Eminent being one of them. Still, the boy rode a good race. Others Who ran well were Adelphi, Thrasher, Swiftray, St. Roger, and Alpinist. Alpinist got poorly off and with a good beginning '?■ may have won. ■ ' , ■- Rulanut improves. Headlady, favourite for the two and three-yeat-old race, drew 11, but soon reached the front and endeavoured to lead all the way. She was still in front half-way up the straight, but they closed on het and Rulantli came'with a-fine dash to win nicely from Copper King, with Mr. Kemball’s other pair, Sir Pombal and Cape Royal, in the minor places. But for Copper King he would have scooped the pool. Headlady, Michael \ Angelo, and Miladi finished just behind the placed horses. . Rulanut’s performance was very good for he drew 13 and had to come from the back. Lady Pam’s half-brother. Cape Royal, having his first race and also carrying 7jlb. overweight, rap in most promising fashion. Copper. King was always handy and is an |tnproyer, but Furlong, Who was well fancied, got, off only moderately well and was always in trouble. Headlady stopped badly over the last furlong. . Shrewd Surprises. Shrewd created a big surprise in the Liverpool Handicap, for which he was tho rank outsider bar one. He took charge when settled down and was never headed. With the exception of: High Faintin’, they all had a chapce to beat him. High Faintin’ was squeezed back -at tho start. 1 He moved up fast down the back, and, with Desert Song and Little Doubt, was challenging in the straight. Shrewd, however, could, not . be 'reached, and the extra effort on High Faintin’ told on him,at the finish and he just failed to beat Desert Song for second. Little Doubt was a handy fourth, then Spear Lad and Cessation. Shrewd has come to his form again and won well, but High Falutin’ was. unlucky. Detert Song is rdciflg consistently. . , „ Win for Maiden. Waratah scored very decisively in the hack sprint, although he was nil out to do so. The favourite. Hampden, made the pacF'and lasted till well in the
straight, where Projection and Warntah drew away. Projection was in front with half a fuHohg to go, but Waratah wore him down; Lady Hone improved into fourth place and Beaconsfield was next. Hampden stopped over the last furlong. The winner was Unlucky in the maiden race the first day and has not dohe
much racing. He is out of the speedy Gladiole.
Another Surprise. Habit, hot favourite in the otiedividend field Tor the second-class handicap, was made to do. her best from the start and Was never nearer than third, eventually finishing a bad last. Actaeon endeavoured, to win all the way, and very nearly succeeded in bringing off a rare surprise. However, he ran himself to a -standstill and was caught in the last strides by Billion, who whs also at a long price, Babel Was a close third after beginning slowly, and Imateagirl. the first to take on the winner, weakened into fourth after an improved race. It was. Billion’s first win for over twelve months. Actaeon ran his best race of the season and with a bit of luck would htfVe won. A Splendid Finish. ' Joie de Vai came from right back to win narrowly In the hack seven furlongs, finishing better than any of her opponents. It was the best finish of the meeting, heads only separating half a dozen horses. Barbacan led with Zcphyrus to the straight, Zeebrugge on the outer being hafidy at the turn. They Closed up in the straight for a splendid finish, Joie de Vai just getting up after several had looked the winner. It was a good performance. Cape Town nearly brought off another coup for Mr. Kemball, all of whose horses ran well during the day. Barbacan had every chance. Aston All the Way. Aston, hot favourite in the four-horse race that concluded'the meeting, led all the way and scored comfortably from Kozan,' who Was the only one to make any serious threat, ' _ ■ ■■ 1 7 ' ' ' ■■ , .
