CANADA’S PROPOSALS
N.Z. Trade Treaty BUTTER ARRANGEMENT \ - Ottawa, December 11. > The tentative Canadian proposals for the New Zealand trade parley include a butter arrangement similar to that with Australia. Canada is prepared to place a duty on foreign lemons and raw wool to give New Zealand an advantage, and is particularly anxious to sell in return automobiles, rubber, newsprint, and canned vegetables. Under the treaty between Canada and Australia, butter . from the , Commonwealth pays a duty of 5 cents per pound, as against 8 cents per pound which Cap# ada has charged on New Zealand butter since October, 1930. One indication of the adverse effect of the increased duty on New Zealand butter is given by the following’ table of shipments to Canada from the Dominion: — 1936-27 .. 124,270‘b0xe5. 1927- .. 277,592 „ 1928- .. 512,598 „ 1929- .. 842,275 „ 1930- .. ’ 75,151 „
