Poultry Industry Scheme LEGISLATIVE CONTROL Urging that the poultry industry had about reached its limit as a voluntary organisation, Mr. J. N. McLean, organiser of the New Zealand Poultry Association,. addressed the poultrykeepers during their visit to the Poultry Experimental Station at Wallaceville on Saturday afternoon. He outlined the scheme for legislation, similar to that governing the fruit industry, and said that a Bill to this end had been in preparation, or had been prepared, during the time that Mr. A. J. Murdoch had been Minister of Agriculture. Under the provisions of the proposed Bill, all poultry-keepers who sold eggs would be registered and would pay a fee of 2/6 per 100 fowls, or part of a hundred, but reasonable exemptions would be provided for. Such an Act would work in the interests of the poultry industry in that in the event of their being any cause for complaint action could be taken. Under a scheme like that all who sold eggs for profit would be brought together, and it might be possible to subsidise, to a reasonable extent, the export of eggs. The proposals had the support of the Agricultural Department, said Mr. McLean, and also that of Mr. Murdoch when he was Minister of Agriculture. Although Mr. Murdoch’s successor had not been favourable to it. he believed that his opposition was made with a lack of knowledge of the industry
