WOMAN IN RIVER
Rescue and Prosecution COMMITTED FOR TRIAL By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch. December 8. Gertrude McConaghv (27). single, a domestic servant, was committed for trial by the magistrate, Mr. E. D. Mosley. S.M., to-day, on charges of attempting to commit suicide and attempting to murder her four-year-old son on November 26 by drowning in the Avon River. A witness gave evidence of seeing the accused in the Avon with a child which she seemed to be pushing toward the bank. Witness pulled botji out. Accused said she had been driven to drowning herself by a man she was living with and his mother. Albert Francis Lee, at whose home the accused had been staying, said he never ill-treated her, but had spoken harshly to her at times. Lee’s mother said the girl often displayed bad temper. A letter, allegedly left by the accused, and read in court, said: "I wish you all.the best of luck with your lady love. Stick to her. Don’t treat her like you did me. Bubby and I will not land in your life again.”
