GRAB AND RUN
Railway Bus Robbed
PURSUIT IN DARKNESS
Thief Gets Clear Away
An audacious robbery’ was carried out on Friday evening when a thief grabbed from one of the Railway Department’s buses the bag containing takings amounting to about £4. The bus at the time was standing near the Telephone Exchange Building, Featherston Street. A pursuit followed, but the thief escaped.
Leaving his bus, which was empty, the driver of the robbed vehicle went to the one In front on the stand to get the correct time. The two men were speaking together when they saw a man who had been a member of a group of three men standing nearby dart forward and dash into the unattended bus. He snatched the cash bag from its fastenings and jumped out of the bus, fleeing toward the wharves. The same men who had seen the theft started out in pursuit of the robber, who then altered his course. The quarry had a good start, and was able to maintain his advantage. The chase continued through the railway yards, but aided by the darkness the thief got away.
