“WINGED VICTORY”
Bronzes for Carillon SCULPTOR’S PROPOSAL Mr. R. O. Gross, the Auckland sculptor who was responsible for the bronze horse of the War Memorial, is at present in Wellington. He has brought with him small scale models of three bronzes, at present only a suggestion for the ornamentation of the carillon tower —something artistic to break up the rather dead straight lines of the edifice, immediately in front'of the doors leading to the Hall of Memories..
The idea is to have a Winged Victory—a female figure in flowing draperies in the act of stepping forward and holding aloft in her left hand the symbolical torch of victory over death—in honour of those in whose memory the tower has been and the bells given. It is proposed that this figure, in bronze, should o’ertop the balustrade of the .first terrace of the structure in front of the Hall of Memories, and that bronzes in the Corm of lions couchant should be placed on the top of the side walls of the first flight of steps from the ground. So far not even all the members of t.ie board of trustees have seen the models, and there has been no discussion as to the acceptance or rejection of the idea.
