LAWN TENNIS

Association Member Leaving

The Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Association is shortly to lose one of its staunchest members. Mr. R. D. hmith, of St. Roman's Avenue, Lower Hutt, has obtained a position in Featherston, and he is soon to leave to fake up his residence there. . To the untiring efforts of Mr. Smith in executive positions the Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Association owes its present strong position. So great was the opposition in certain quarters that it is probable that but for Mr. Smiths strength of character, fearlessness, and unwillingness to make concessions unless the major issues were protected, there would today be no Hutt Valley association. In all discussions, too, he was amenable to reason and open to be convinced by sound argument. He showed, tbo, a wise toleration for the other man’s point of view. ; , While he, himself, was but a moderate tennis player, he did all in. his power to encourage potential champions wherever he saw them. He was never more pleased than when initiating tournaments, arranging inter-association or inter-club tennis where the promising players could demonstrate their skill under competitive conditions.
