Vocal Scholarship
WELLINGTON MAN WINS Only two days remain in which to bring to completion the 1931 festival of the Wellington Competitions Society, and the programme last night attracted i a large audience. The event of the day was the class for the society’s vocal scholarship for gentlemen over 21. There were 13 entries, all but one being Wellington competitors. The winner was Mr. R. Cowie, Wellington, 171 points! Some excellent playing was heard in , the chief piano solo for the silver challenge cup presented by Messrs, H. Nimmo and Sons, the first- award being gained by Miss Noel Cape-Williamson, Christchurch,'With 88 points. There were some enjoyable elocutionary items, especially in the Dickens’s character sketch. New competitors in these classes have given added interest and zest to the competitions, and the newcomers have met with a measure of success. The champion of champions elocutionary section was brought to a conclusion, two of the finalists being Wellington competitors, the third being from Oamaru. The winner was Mrs. Dorothy Dunn, Dunedin, with 264 points. Mr. J. Harper, Gore, was an easy first for the gold medal in the oration, but the special prize for the oration, debate and impromptu speech was won by Mr. W. J. Mountjoy with a total of 210 points, Mr. J. Harper being second with' The new curtains promised by the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, at the opening of the competitions, arrived yesterday and last night replaced''the old ones which have done duty at the Town Hall since 1918.
