Wellington Trotting Club MEMBERS RECEPTIVE Encouraging Small Bettor A strong recommendation to the in coming stewards to consider the ad visability of installing a five-shilling to talisator at the Hutt Park was made last night at the annual meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club, held at Petone. The matter was brought forward bv Mr. A. Anderson, who instanced the success of the five-shilling totalisator on other racecourses in the Dominion. He moved that it be a strong recommendation to the incoming stewards to con sider the installation of such a totalisator. The motion was seconded by Mr. T. M. Burke. To do as was suggested, said the chairman (Mr. J. Sharpe), would involve a great deal of alteration in the machines and a great deal of expense to run. The stewards had considered the matter, but had decided to let it stand over for a while yet. It would mean a great deal more wages to take the same amount of money. / Mr. C. M. Dickson said the question could very well be left to the stewards. Speaking later, Mr. Anderson questioned whether the club gave sufficient encouragement to the people to attend the trotting meetings. “If you make the tickets low enough to give people an incentive to attend the meetings,” he said, “it will pay for itself. I don’t think we encourage the people enough. Instead i of sitting on the tickets as though they were made of gold we should give them out, and when we get the people there get them to bet by making it low_~ enough. I don’t suggest that everyone" should be let on the course free, but the cost should be made lower. If a member has exhausted his tickets he should gladly be given more. People don’t just go to the course to see the horses go round, you know.”
