WAR ON BLONDES

New Champion of

Brunettes

“I am chosen to uphold the rights of brunettes the whole world over.”

This, in her own words, is the mission of a beautiful Roumanian girl, Mlle. Floriselle Constantinesco, who has just been chosen by Charlie Chaplin to star in his next film. The choice is an event of world-wide importance to women in that it marks the turning point in fashion. * Mr. Chaplin is determined to bring about a brunette revival. Paris speaks of it as “the coming battle between blondes and brunettes." Mlle. Constantinesco‘told me how she became Chaplin’s choice when she gave 'an exclusive interview in her boudoir in a fashionable hotel. I found her (states a “Sunday Chronicle” correspondent) to be a very beautiful brunette with large black eyes, sweeping heavy eyelashes, crimson lips, pink ear lobes, and a pale olive complexion—just olive without a vestige of colour in the cheeks. Temperamentally, she is a mixture of langour and vivacity, undoubtedly intriguing and alluring. She is at present a student of political science at Paris University. "I never expected to become Mr. Chaplin’s or anybody else’s star without ever having played in a film and without even a scrap of ambition to do so,” she said. “‘I want a brunette for my next film,’ Mr. Chaplin said, when he first saw me in Berlin, ‘and you are the type of brunette I visualised but could not find in Hollywood. “ ‘Why should all stars be fairhaired?’ he added impetuously. ‘There are millions of men and women who prefer brunettes to blondes. Why deny them the chance of admiring their favourite type? Besides,, nine times out of ten they photograph better. “Mr. Chaplin called upon me to uphold the right of the dark girl in the cinema world. I am going to do my level best to justify his confidence.’
