SYNTHETIC GUT FOR RACQUETS
The manufacture of patent synthetic gut for tennis racquets is a new industry that has sprung up at Fort Dunlop. Birmingham. The rise in the price of sheep gut brought about the industry. Sufficient sheep gut to string one racquet costs as much as 18s.
The new gut, which is waterproof. Is becoming increasingly popular, and racquets strung with it have even found
their way on to the courts of Wimbledon. It is peing employed very extensively at a well-known racquet factory at Waltham Abbey, where 1500 miles of gut and binding are required annually.
This factory can turn out 125,000 racquets every year. Seventy-five per cent, are exported to Central Europe, where the vogue for outdoor sports has created a large market.
