WORKLESS DIGGERS.
Upper Hutt’s Subsidy
HELPING ASSOCIATION Providing a subsidy of. 30/- in the £1 on all grants by the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association for the provision of work for ex-soldiers, the Upper Hutt Borough Council is the only local body subsidising the association’s efforts, it was stoted at the meeting of the executive comifiittee. Owing to the very limited funds available at the association for the relief of distress, it was not found possible to deal with other than the most necessitous cases, providing in these instances such assistance as the payment of levies and the issue of small orders for meals, beds, and fuel. The secretary reported that some 289 levies had been paid by the committee since April 1. General Martin, late of the Australian Imperial Forces, attended the meeting and addressed the executive on the subject of legacy clubs, which 'were now working with great success in Australia, especially in the west, with the object of making special provision, such as finding employment, for the children and other dependants of ex-servicemen. The opinion of the members was that much was already being done in this direction through the R.S.A.. Toe H„ and Rotary, and by the provisions of the Trenthnm scholarships, but the subject is to receive further consideration at a subsequent meeting.'
