WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Big Scores on Saturday Tho city reserves, particularly Newtown Park, were In a bad state after the recent rains, and this militated against good hockey in the Wellington women’s championship contests on Saturday. The Surprise of the day was the defeat of University by Ramblers in the last few minutes of the match, after an interesting display. This is Ramblers Initial win this season. Swifts, College Old Girls 1 and Hutt won their games with comfortable ease. In the senior B grade Karori had no trouble in beating Swifts, and Hutt defeated Training College. SENIOR A MATCHES Playing a greatly Improved game, Ramblers broke its duck by surprising University, winning by the only goal of the match. Play was very even throughout, and when it looked as though the result would culminate In a scoreless draw, Miss R. Thomas, who ehanged from centre-half to centre-forward in the second spell, with but a few minutes to full time, received a neat pass just inside the circle. She drove in a dazzling shot that had Miss Hefford beaten all the way. Ramblers played hard for the success, all the members of the team doing their utmost to save the day, and the players are to be complimented on the outcome of their efforts. Through this win Ramblers hand over the bottom rung of the championship ladder to Hula, Ramblers now having one point more than Huia. Hula was expected to give another good account of itself against College Old Girls, bnt the expectation was not fulfilled, the ex-collegians winning comfortably by 4 goals to nil. Although this contest was the more interesting of tho three senior A matches played at Newtown Park, it was considerably spoilt by the somewhat unplayable state of the ground. Old Girls had a two goals advantage at half-time, Misses ,S. Swinburne (left-wing) and - I. Pickering (right-wing) being the goalgetters, while in the second spell the same two wingers again scored a goal apiece, Swifts overwhelmed Training College, winning by 10 goals to L The students seemed to have an off day,, being unable to do the right thing when the opportunity offered. It was their weakest display this season. Swifts showed good combination, but it was evident over the last quarter of the match that the team wae not doing its best, having considerably eased up. Miss M. Wilkins, who was outstanding at centre-forward for Swifts, scored five goals, while Miss J. Harper, who also gave a splendid account of herself, goaled on four occasions, and Miss Graham once. Training College’s goal was obtained by Miss Maule. Mr. W. Keys was referee. Wenerel was no match for Hutt, being outclassed in practically every department of the game. The Valley team piled on the goals with ease, and had accumulated 8 before time was called. It was a poor display of hockey, with Hutt continuouslyhammering at the Wenerel goal.

SENIOR B GAMES Karori had little difficulty in' beating Swifts by 3 goals to 0. It was a poor exhibition of hockey, due mainly to the bad condition of the ground at Newtown Park. Karori had slightly the best of matters in the opening spell, and led by one goal to nil at half-time. In the second session the Karori backs and goalkeeper rarely saw the ball, play being confined to Swifts’ twenty-five. Bad shooting robbed Karori of several good scoring chances. For the winners Miss R. Bums netted twice, and Miss T. Hennessy scored once. Mr. W. Keys was referee. Hutt beat Training College by 4 goals to 1. The half-time score was In favour of Hutt by 4—o. Goals for Hutt were obtained by Misses McDowell (3) and Kelpie. Mr. E. MCLeod was referee. LOWER GRADES Junior A. Toa 4 (Misses E. Te Hilto 3, and L. Arthur), Webley 2 (Miss Maidment and Mrs. Dunn). Play was fast and exciting throughout. Both teams scored a goal each In the first spell. Toa showed the better understanding, and won on its merits. Mr. A. Roxburgh was referee. Hula 0, Swifts Q. Both teams played without goalkeepers. Hospital 3 (Misses McCullough . S'-’and Dickson), Centics 1 (Miss, McCallum), 1. Eastbourne 10, Ramblers 1. Ramblers played two short. j Wenerel 3 (Misses Lawrence 2, and A O’Brien), University 0. Upper Hutt 7 (Misses J. Avery 3, V. Murray 3, and B. Inwood), Technical Old Girls 6 (Miss .Turd 6). Hutt 2, Old Girls 0. Junior B. Hutt 1, Karori 1. Technical College B 6, College Old Girls 0. Wenerel 1 (Miss E. Calver), University 1 (Miss E. Purdie).
