TRAM CONCESSIONS
Legless Returned Soldiers ECONOMY ADJUSTMENT Up till a few .months ago all legless returned soldiers were granted the freedom of the Wellington city tramways, but when economy measures were necessitated by falling revenue this privilege was cut down to those who were earning less than £3OO a year (Including pension). Now the tramways committee, through the council, has agreed to issue to legless ex-soldiers an annual pass at a cost of £5. On the surface this does not-seem to be a very great concession, but it is to those who live on a threepenny section, as at the rate of 3/- a week (using the ticket in and out for six days of the week) the cost of transit would amount to £7/16/-, so that the concession means a clear saving of £2/16/- a year to the men concerned.
An anomaly mentioned by some of the men is that the pension in some instances just makes the amount of their income over £3OO a year, and so prevents them getting free passes.
