HOUSING FOR WORKLESS
Building Acquired at Petone
By courtesy of the owners, the oht Petonc Central Hotel building is to De utilised as an accommodation house for single unemployed men who are “right up against it.” It is possible that more beds and bedding will be required, and those able to spare any will, it is stated, be conferring a great boon. That the old hotel building has been secured for this purpose is due to the energy and enthusiasm of the mayor, Mr. D. McKenzie, and the generosity of Staples Brewery. It has been brought home to Mr. McKenzie that there are a number of single men in Petone unable to pay for board and lodging. As it would be unfair in these times to expect boarding-house proprietors to jeopardise their means of livelihood by keeping these men without payment, it was considered by Mr. McKenzie that an accommodation house for them would be a great step forward. For Mr. McKenzie to conceive this idea of giving help was to set about finding the means to give effect to it. As the Petone Central Hotel is now removed to a structure that is a credit to the borough, the old building has proved the very thing for the purpose. s
