POWER BOARD CHAIRMAN
Question of Remuneration
The question of the chairman s remuueration for the year 1931-32 came before the Hutt. Valley Electric. Power Board at its annual meeting. Last year it was £200; -and, .it was resolved that this year the remuneration should be the same. An amendment to fix it ,at £lBO was lost. . ~ Mr; A. J. Hobbs moved that the remuneration should be the same as last year, £2OO. He thought the position of the chairman and the work it entailed was worth that. The motion was seconded by Mr. A. J. McCurdy. Mr. A. Anderson moved as an amendment that the remuneration be £l5O. “Let us make the cut at the top,” he said. He also stated that the board members should share in a cut. “We are here,” said Mr. Blackley, to determine the chairman’s remuneration, not to make a cut. If a cut is to be made, may it not be made later on? If Mr. Anderson will make it £lBO 1 will second his amendment. Mr. Anderson was agreeable. Mr. Press said he could not support the .amendment. He .felt that if., the, hom’d ultimately decided on a cut that -was the time it should be effected. Mr. Barber wanted to know what would be the position if the Government did not agree with the amount, of remuneration the board fixed. They might give us a kick,” he said. The engineer and general manager said the board had power to fix the. chairman’s remuneration up to £3OO. The amendment was lost and the motion carried. When this question was settled, Air. A. Walker, on the motion of Mr. E. Windley, was unanimously elected the chairman tor the'year 1931-32. He has been a member of the board tor the last six years.
