TROTTING

Oamaru’s New Track

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Overcheck.”) Acceptances for tlie Manawatu Trotting Chili’s winter meeting on Wednesday, May 27, will close to-morrow at 6 p.m. Tlie Oamaru Trotting Club raced on its now track for the first time on Saturday. That it provided excellent going can be judged by the times registered in the various events, each winner going several seconds better than his or her handicap. Tho exact figures are as follow:—

Still Unlucky. Kelp registered another second at Oamaru on Saturday, defeating all but Pageant, who is now back to something like his best. form. Humphreys has effected a considerable improvement, in Pageant, in whom Miss Hinds lias a useful second string to Harold Logan. A Promising Sort. Tat Wrack, who is by Wrack from Tatsy Dillon, ran fourth in tlie Papakaio Handicap at Oamaru. and in that form should not be long in securing some stake money. In this race the winner went 2.43 3-> from a 3.0 minute mark, so it will Im sem that Tat Wrack must have gone round about 2.50, ijuito a smart effort. Bad and Good Performance. In tlie first race at Oamaru Iwanta. from R. Townley’s stable, was made a good favourite. She broke soon after the start.and was not prominent, at any t jL the dav she was early in the lead in the Walkaura Handleap, and wa? att "j stewards. A Likely Trotter. Margaret Parrish, as her name implies, is'bv Guv Parrish from a Great Audubon mare, and although she ranks as a five-year-old it was only her sec, otid st art. D. C. Watts drove her, and tins a s first success behind an . ’ He was also successful later in the day behind Prince Wrack, who won the Ad vance Handicap in 3.29 4-*>. Unlucky. Jester was made a good favourite for the Advance Handicap at Oamaru. but suffered defeat by a couple of He was somewhat unlucky in that at the start he had to be taken out wide in order to escape trouble, while he tangled .4) vards'from the post. His connections are unlucky, in that their horse has disclosed his form and is always sure to be solidly supported. , t . On account of his failure to begin correctly, Ruin entirely spoilt his chances at Oamaru. It is to be hoped that he is not too aptly named. Happy Land Again.

Happv Land thoroughly deserved his win in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru, as he outstayed the opposition. At a critical stage it looked as though he was hopelosslv placed, but. an opening presenting itself Bussell pushed him through to win bv the best part of a length in 4.29 4-5. Dillon Logan had every chance, being first to turn for home. Cranleigh finished well, but covered a good deal of extra ground through being taken to the outer side of the course for the run home. Two on End.

Harold Denver has now won in each of his last two starts, and as he is still on an easy mark it does not seem that he hap yet reached the end of his tether. He won by only half a length, but this could have been increased had his driver so desired. Ho is only five years, so should be capable of considerable improvement yet. Another Guy Parrish.

Another of the gets of Guy Parrish in Bessie Parrish, a three-year-old mare from Bessie Bingen, accounted for the first race at Hamilton on Saturday, giving a faultless display. She is going to take mgn honours, barring accidents. Distinctly Unlucky.

At the start of the Waikato Handicap on Saturday, First Flight whipped round and lost a lot of ground, notwithstanding which she defeated all but Grand Canyon, going 4.35 4-5. She has now run third three times ou end. and surely she must soon secure the thick end of the prize. Still Going Strong.

Wimmera King, who is said to be 25 years old. won the Members’ Handicap from end to end, though at the finish lie had only a nose to the good from Jock Bingen, who was conceding 96 yards. The ex-Hiitt trainer, S 7 M. August, now trains Wimmera King, and drove him to victory.
