POLICE PRAISED

Prompt Action During Australian Riots

MINISTER’S ATTITUDE

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright

Sydney, May 19.

The Minister of Education, Mr. W. Davies, has denied that he yielded to the unemployed on the South Coast in regard to food relief distribution. A Bulli message states that the Woonona branch of the Australian Labour Party unanimously passed a resolution complimenting the police on their prompt action in preventing a cowardly, murderous attack on peaceful citizens at Bulli and Woonona, and appealed to the Lang Government to give the citizens greater police protection against a travelling band of Communists.

An earlier message stated that police supervision in the food relief depots on the South Coast was to be withdrawn. As a result local committees, it was thought, would have a difficulty in preventing cases of imposition. Representatives of the Miners’ Union, Trades and Labour Council, and the unemployed met the Minister of Education, Sir. W. Davies, who, it was said, granted a request that local committees should act without the presence of the police. The discussion followed serious food relief riots at Bulli and Port Kembla.

AGAINST INFLATION

Complete Unity of Forces

Sydney, May 19.

Complete unity of the anti-inflation and anti-repudiation forces in New South Wales at the next Federal election seems assured by the decisions reached by the National Association Council.

The arrangement arrived at by the second unity conference of delegates from the All-for-Australia League, the National Party, and the Country Party was endorsed.

This means that a committee of fifteen will be appointed to constitute a central council with power to appoint an executive, and also any sub-commit-tees necessary to control the Federal campaign. LANG IN BRISBANE Economic Views Expounded Brisbane, May 19. Mr.'ll. T. Lang expounded his economic plan for two hours to nearly 5000 who packed the Brisbane Stadium. He received a good hearing. Mr. A. Beasley said that his section of the Federal House had no intention of putting Mr. J. H. Scullin out and giving power to Mr. J. A. Lyons, who had “ratted” on the Labour Party. DEFAULTING STATE Court Action to be Taken Sydney, May 19. The. statutory time for filing a defence to the action brought by the Commonwealth and other States against New South Wales, claiming £557,519 as a portion of the sum paid by the Commonwealth to the London bondholders on the default of the State Government, expired yesterday. • No defence has been lodged in the High'Court Registry, and the Commonwealth Crown Solicitor will now take steps to have the action set down for trial.
