POLICE PROTECTION
**A days ago attention was drawn in The Dominion to the limitations In police supervision of the business area of Lower Hiitt throughout the late hours of the night and the early morning. Reference was made to the subject at the Lower Hutt Chamber of Commerce annual meeting. “During the year,” said the annual report, “the Lower Hutt police force has been strengthened, and the chamber places on record an appreciation of the very smart work which has been accomplished In the district.” The increase comprised two constables, so enabling a constable to go on night patrol duty. It was considered at the annual meeting, however, that there was Still a need for more protection at night, as the shopping area alone was over two miles in length. Application is ts be made to the Police Department for extra protection at night. The opinion of shopkeepers is to be soughton the question of appointing a nightwatchman. If the opinion is favourable, tlic Chamber of Commerce will call for applications and select a suitable candidate.
