NELSON SURPRISES Quantum Beats Kozan THE DOVE WINS THE CUP Dominion Special Service. Nelson, April 30. The Nelson Jockey Club's annual meeting opened in threatening weather. Late in the day there was drizzling rain, which did not affect the track. The attendance was fair, and the totalisator investments amounted to £5663/10/-, Flying at the Finish. While Lady Ronald, who reproduced Trentham form, deserved to win the Novice .Stakes, it is probable that Croupier, a novice from the Corry stable, would have won had he not been caught In the tapes and squeezed out at the start, lie was second to last into the straight, and was flying into third place. He will be hard on Saturday. Public Crushes. The public crashed when The Sun, a very hot favourite, took no part in the Hope Handicap. Lady Rene, with an apprentice allowance, held a handy position all way, and drew away to win with something in hand from Landmark. She won impressively. Ben Hur will be improved by the race. He was third, and failed only over the last furlong. Bold Archer was blocked in the straight, but finished on strongly. Won All the Way.' The Dove produced one of her periodical surprise efforts when she led all the way to win the Nelson Cup. Her nearest attendants in the early running were Rory Mor, Noteworthy,, and Spearmlss, with Cessation, Courtlike, and Black Mint next. The only change in the order down the back stretch was that Courtlikc ran into fourth place. The Dove led itlto the straight and was immediately tackled by Noteworthy, but she had him doing his best and won by a neck. Cessation came from the back into third place,, half a length behind Noteworthy. Rory Mor found the distance too far. He had every chance. Noteworthy, who was a hot favourite, stopped over the last half-fur-long. Courtlike made a promising move forward across the top, but could not sustain it. Black Mint and Spearmlss both looked In need of a race. Kozan Beaten. Quantum brought about the defeat of a very hot favourite in Kozan in the Stewards’ Handicap. Harold Young, on the winner, went out and made Kozan carry his 9.4 all the way, and the three-year-old was not equal to the task. Quantum’s was one of the easiest wins of the day. He looks remarkably well, and should win again on the circuit, Another End-to-end Win. Full Crop, a three-year-old full brother to Singleton, won the Electric Hack Handicap from end to end. White Doe would have been closer had she not run wide at the horn* turn. She should do., better. Both. Projection and Baskier ran poor races. Atholspear Sticks On. Atholspear gave B. Burgess his second win of the day when he scored decisively in the Waimea Handicap. Hirst Baid looked a likely winner at the distance, but Atholspear produced a very run which landed him a good winner. Courtlike stopped to a walk after leading tor six furlongs. TRENTHAM WORK Lady Pam’s Good Gallop MALAYAN GOES WELL The conditions for training at Trentham I yesterday were perfect, and the tracks were fast. Most of the work was on the plough. Routine work of moderate interest was the order. Ladj’ Pam showed up well in running seven in Imin. 28Jsec. Spear Lad took her over the first four in 50Jsec., and Fair Wind brought her home over the last three In 38sec. Lady Pam Improves all the time. Spear Lad is coming on nicely. Tea Queen ran four on the grass in 50} sec., doing it nicely. Malayan and Historic went ten furlongs. They were doing easy pace for the first stages, and ran home from the mile post in Imln. 45 4-ssec., the first halt in 54 3-5 sec. Malayan finished very well after going nicely throughout, but Historic is below his best. Zephyrus ran seven in Imin. 33}sec., but was not doing his best. Arrowzone did a couple of rounds, and ran home from the halt the last time in 52}sec. He is carrying more condition than he ever had before. Hymgreat worked well over a round, doing the last six in Imln. 21 2-ssec. Arikinui sprinted the last four of his work in 50 2-ssec., doing' it nicely. Staghunter (A. Jenkins) and Courageous (P. Burgess) schooled over the hurdles. At the last Staghnnter ran off and Courageous baulked. Taken back they both jumped it Well, and going over the same jumps again gave a satisfactory display. NOTES AND COMMENTS Wanganui Training Notes CARINTHIA’S FORM (By “The Watcher.'') Acceptances for the first day of the K-mont Baclng Club's winter meeting, to he hold on Wednesday and Thursday, May 0 and 7, will elose to-night, at S.W <> clock. The telegraph office at Hawera closes at b p.m. Nominations for the Masterion Hieing Club's autumn meeting, to be held on May 22 and 23, will close on Monday, at 9 pan. The first race at Kiecarton on Saturday will be started at 12.30 p.m. Inevitable has been engaged for the Auckland winter meeting, but will probably go to Wlngatul if the Dunedin programme is suitable.

The ex-Trcnthnm steeplechaser Matti, who recommenced racing at Riverton, lias been schooling well at Wlngatui. He may make the trip to Auckland.

Coolmint is being schooled over the hur dies at Takanlnl.

Royal Finance is reported from Nev Plymouth as greatly improved by her race at Stratford.

Crenna Town (G. Brown) was schooled over four hurdles at New Plymouth on Tuesday, but gave a very poor display. He climbed over each obstacle, but lie may improve with experience. He went better over two jumps for L. Jarvis the previous morning.

Pat's Boy lias Joined the hurdling re emits at Trentham.

In commenting upon Red Imehsias Lgmont engagement I overlooked the tact, in stating that lie had only run one steeplechase, that ho contested the Great Northern 2 years ago. On that occasion he fell on the hill the second time round.

Mr I! C. La Pouple, who owns Moerangi,' has moved to Wanganui, and also iris Waitaunaha and a thrce-year-old Acre "■elding out of Red Gleam In his team Moerangi is the only one in work nt present.

Kowhatu lias been schooling well over the steeplechase fences at Wanganui. H. Dulieu lias been in the saddle, and he Mill liavo the mount at Hawera.

Inlying Swift. Flying Swift figures among the entries for the Wanganui Steepleebase. He went wrong in the wind last season, after sliovin" a lot of promise, but he has been operated upon in the interval, so it remains to be seen how ho will run. If lie can be got right he should win sour: money, as he proved himself a • good jumper.

Rlccarton’s Extra. Considerable interest was aroused by the recent announcement that the Westland Racing Club and the Ashburton County Racing Club were likely to combine tor a meeting at Riccarton on May 23. The latest news from Hokitika, however, suggests a serious hitch, and until further information is available, the postton appears obscure. At the same time, ft will not be nn.v surprise to find that an extra meeting will be Held at Riccarton at an early date.

Yearlings Arrive. Four yearlings purchased at the recent Sydney sales arrived at Auckland on Tuesday from Sydney by the Ulimaroa for the Ellerslie trainer F. Gilchrist. They are: b.c. by Top Gallant—Columbia, br. f. by Pantheon—Dora's Double, br. f. by Pantheon—lodine, br. f. by Ornamentation —Vocal Princess. Carintliia. Carinthia was last for most of the way in the Rosewill Handicap at Timaru, and was last to finish, but he ran his mile and a quarter in about 2.9. He has lost most of his speed, but can carry on for a long way at an even gait, and it is this which stands to him when opponents are fading at the end of long journeys (says the “Timaru Herald.") Carinthia will go to Auckland if the weights suit, probably taking in Wanganui on the way, as he will need all the racing he can get to tune him up for the Great Northerns.

A Good Family. Mr. Frank Ormond has running on his property at Karamu a coming yearling full-brother to Pakltere and Hineweht, who is therefore also a half-blooded relative to Toxeuma. He is said to show a lot of quality and promise. Tc Aupaki was mated uTth Arrowsmith last season and the result is being looked to with interest. The opportunity to visit Arrowsmith again will not be available, as he has died.

Wanganui Notes. Work at Wanganui on Tuesday included the following:—Zarene went six furlongs, running the first half-mile in 501 secs, and easing up to register 1.20 for the full distance. She is engaged in the Farewell Hack Handicap at Marton at 8.12. Knollmere went a mile, the last seven furlongs of which he left behind in 1.3'2 4-5. He is in the Hack Welter at Marton with 9.10, and is also in the Dash Handicap with 9.0. Hinewai lilt out nicely in covering hair a mile In Slsecs. She is engaged in the Dash Hack at Marton. The Warden (Moran) was given a couple of rounds over the hurdles, being picked up on the second circuit by talma (N. Voitre). The Warden jumped cleanly and well, except for rapping the second to last obstacle when he was evidently tiring a little. Valma gave a fair display, though she hit a couple of fences. "Just an Idea was given useful work. He is to run in the big event at Marton on Saturday. Racing Dates. The committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club has announced an intention of asking the Racing Conference to consider the question In regard to a rearrangement of racing dates. Just liow far it is intended to carry the idea remains to be seen, but it will mean a big battle to effect a change of any great importance. Many clubs have established a right to dates by holding them for years, while others shift about the calendar. There is no doubt that a well-established date that has rigidly been adhered to becomes an asset to a club. It becomes a holiday fixture in a district, and is looked forward to with an anticipation of enjoyment. Owners and trainers know when and where to find it, and so are apt to set a horse or two for such a meeting. On the other hand, clubs which chop and change dates of meetings are apt to lose patronage because of the instability in connection with them. A really sweeping change would be next door to impossible unless it were bused on centralisation. Travelling expenses to owners make a very big item during the course of a season, but some clubs seem to ignore that aspect of the question, and select dates that do not study expense to owners. Some meetings are spread out far too much. It may be deemed necessary to do so in order to catch the public patronage, but it certainly does not study the person who has to foot the bill for travelling expenses. The existing state of affairs in racing proves conclusively that we have far too much of it. Some clubs have been kept alive by revenue not derived from running a meeting, and when a slump occurs they can only carry on in the face of an almost sure loss. This state of affairs gcnerallj' results in the small stakes that are the cause of most of the trouble that occurs tn connection with racing. Centralisation would mean the wiping out of some clubs and amalgamation of others. It would also be the moans of improving the sport in manjways, and it seems to be the only way of readjusting the calendar. It may seem too drastic a change io suggest that the clubs in the best position to cater for racing should get the best dates. Clubs striving for individual interests would fight against such a suggestion, and by so doing obviously stand against the best iaterests of the sport.
