SENT TO PRISON
Theft of Articles arid Money UNDESIRABLE IMMIGRANT s. -C ■ . ■ . An. alleged attempt by a woman to steal from him articles which he had stolen from someone else led to the appearance of Saba Agar Gorban, draper, aged 27, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Described by the police as an undesirable type of immigrant, Corbnn was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on a charge of theft. Sub-Inspector Ward said that on April 8 accused visited the office of a friend on Lambton Quay, where both men consumed a quantity of liquor. Complainant fell asleep and when he woke up he found his watch and chain,.a cheque, and a wnllet containing £7 had been stolen. The following'day accused met a woman and went to a house with her, where, it was alleged, she attempted to rob him. The police were communicated with, and on visiting the premises a detective found the cheque referred to lying on the floor. Gorban was allowed to go, but was arrested later at Wanganui. All the articles had been recovered with the exception of the £7. Accused was a single man and a native of Syria, said the sub-inspector. _ A restricted immigrant, he arrived in New Zealand some months ago. His permit had been extended upon representations that he was supporting a relative here. This, however,- was not correct. When arrested, a card, with an assumed name on it. was found in Corban’s possession, showing that he was endeavouring to obtain work under the unemployment scheme. “This appears to be a case of the biter bitten,” said Mr. Leicester, addressing tiie court on behalf of accused. Counsel said that Corban’s fellow-countrymen were prepared to advance a sufficient sum to enable him to return to Sydney. The magistrate asked whether this arrangement was satisfactory to the police. Sub-Inspector Ward: Yes, we will notify the Customs Department and either they or bis relatives can make arrangements to send him out of the country. The magistrate said that in the event of arrangements being made for the accused’s departure he would reduce the sentence. Miscellaneous Cases A further remand until May 13 was granted in a case in which Valentine Charles Blake, butcher, aged 35, was charged with stealing a postal note, valued at 2/G. Bail was renewed. George Louis Bertram, alias George Pollock, labourer, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on a charge of being in arrears in respect of a maintenance order. The warrant is to be suspended sq long as he pays the amount of the arrears, £7, and 37/6 weekly.
