NIGHTMARCH’S GOLD CUP

Thrilling Tussle With Champion Three-year-old ® FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM Bronze Eagle Again Bolts Home; Historic’s Handicap (By “The Watcher.”) Overcast weather with misty rain did not augur well on the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Clubs autumn meeting, but very little moisture fell at Trentham and the com se was not in the least affected and provided dry, fast g oi ngThere was some very keen racing with close finishes. Nigmmarch won the Trentham Gold Cup, defeating the crack three-year-old Karapoti at weight-for-age. After the race the winner received a great reception from the crowd and was paraded on the lawn, the cup being presented to the owner, Mr. A. Louisson, by his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledis oe. Historic and Vertigern staged a hard finish m the Autumn Handicap, and Cadland again won the sprint event. Bronze Eagle showed, very marked superiority over the two-year-olds at the meeting and easily won the Pacific Handicap. Form worked out well, and solidly-supported horses were always in the money or running prominently. . The attendance was again below normal, and the tote figures for the day were £32,218 as against f49,827/10/- on the second day last year, a decrease of £17,609/10/-. The total for the meeting was £68,930/10/-, compared with £102,123 twelve months ago, a decrease of £33,192/10/-.

Favourite Wins. Shatter, favourite for the Highweight, was never further back than third. Air Laddie came at him in the straight, but Shatter, all out. beat him by a neck. The pacemaker, Pat's Boy, was a length and a half away third, with Baskler fourth, then Joie de Vai, Hymgreat, and Skyrider. True Shaft in Form. The open mile at the higher scale of weights saw an interesting and elose finish, the favourite, True Shaft, scoring nicely from an outsider in Malayan. From a perfect start they did not settle down UH nearly two furlongs had been covered. Rin Tin Tin then had charge from

Dainty Ways, Refresher, Pakitere, True Shaft, Staghunter, and Eaglet. Rin Tin Tin led this bunch into the straight, where True Shaft came through. He had the race won at the last furlong, but had to be ridden right out to withstand a hot challenge by Malayan, winning by half a length. Heads separated Malayan, Rin Tin Tin, and Richfield. Then came Refresher, Eaglet, and Staghunter. True Shaft put up a good performance, but it looked as if Richfield would have won had he got a good run through in the straight and been better placed in the running. Malayan showed one of his infrequent glimpses of good form. Niglitmarch’s Gold Cup. Karapoti met his match in the Trentham Gold Cup, Nightmarch finishing too strongly over the last furlong. Karapoti made the pace from Nightmarch, then Star Stranger and Lady Pam. They ran the first six in Imln. 20sec. At the end of seven furlongs Nightmarch ran up alongside Karapoti, evidently with a view to making the three-year-old continue pulling, and they were still together at the mile, run in Imin. *lt) 3-ssec. Down the back Karapoti drew ont a little once more, and reached the mile and a quarter in •Jmin. 14 3-ssec. . He was again a length out from Nightmarch at the mile and a half, run in 2min. 40 4-3 sec., and they entered the straight with Karapoti still holding about a length’s advantage. With the pace right on Nigjtmarch gradually overhauled Karapoti, but the latter, although under the whip, still looked the winner with a furlong to go. Reed then got to work in earnest on Nightmarch, and he made a great response, leaping to the front with about fifty yards to go, and winning by a length. Star Stran-, ger was four lengths away, two lengths in front of Lady Pam. The last half-mile was run in 48sec. Beyond the fact that Karapoti was at a disadvantage in having to make the pace all the way, he had every chance, and this is the style in which he wins all his races. Nightmarch was too good and his finish was characteristically solid. Star Stranger just plugged along, with Lady Pam next, and they never threatened danger. Nightmarch was favourite over Karapoti by £B. Form Works Out. Form worked out well in the hack mile, with Chief Joy and Simba paying the dividends. There was a good deal o£ scrimmaging "oing down the back, until they settled down, and by that time Simba had been knocked right back from an early third, the favourite, Mahora, also getting into trouble. Chief Joy, on the other hand, enjoyed a good passage, and turned for home just behind the leaders, Cessation, Appledore, and The Sun. Chief Joy had the race won half-way up the straight, but Simba came -very strongly over the last furlong, and ran him to half a length. Playground was a length and a half away third, with Zephyrus fourth, then Appledore, The Sun, and Mahora. Simba would have won with a good passage. A Great Two-year-old. Bronze Eagle was a hot pot in the two-year-old race, and, as on Saturday, the issue was never in doubt. He drew No. 4 and was one of the first out, taking the lead on the rails in the first furlong, attended by Columba, from Richborough, Cricket Bat, Oratorian, and High Comedy. Bronze Eagle was out by himself entering the straight, and he won easing up by two lengths from Cricket Bat, who was all out to beat Richborough by half a length. Columba was five lengths back fourth, followed by Flower, High. Comedy, Oratorian, and Lavington. Trader Horn lost his rider. Bronze Eagle was never really doing his best, and he won just as easily as he did the first day. He is undoubtedly high class. High Comedy and Oratorian had every chance. Cricket Bat and Richborough improved. The former, who is halfbrother to Centrepiece and brother to Ball Dress, looks like coming good. Historic by a Head. Historic and Vertigern staged a thrilling finish in the Autumn Handicap, the best the favourite, Hunting Cry, could do, being fourth. Pewa made the running from My Own, Hunting Cry and Historic, the rear being brought up by High Falutln and Mount Boa. The order across the top and into the straight was Pewa and My Own, two lengths out from Hunting Cry, Historic, and Vertigern. The leaders peaked when pressure was applied, and Historic drew out, chased by Vertigern. A hard finish saw Historic reach the line a head in front; Vertigern was two lengths ahead of Pewa, with Hunting Cry fourth, then Black Duke, My Own, and Ball Dress. Historic was always well placed, and won in his characteristic solid fashion.

Vertigern ran up to his best form, and nearly brought off a surprise. Hunting Cry had every chance. Cadland’s Double.Havering started a warm favourite for the open sprint, but after having every chance he had to dip his colours in a hardfought finish to the Improved Cadland. There was a delay at the post, mainly due to Havering refusing to line up. Autopay, Tenterden, Havering, and Rin Tin Tin showed out first, and on to the course proper Rin Tin Tin, Autopay, and Havering led Tenterden, Royal Routine, and Cadland. Autopay had charge at the last furlong, hotly pressed by Havering and Cadland Cadland got the best of a bustling finish, beating Havering by a neck, with Autopay half a length away. Rin Tin Tin was fourth, followed by Limerick, Royal Routine, Paganeill, Toxeuma, and Tenterden. Gray made strenuous efforts on the favourite, but Cadland proved too good and solid. His improved form was a feature of the meeting. Autopay ran another good race, but had every chance. Limerick again ran well. Koran Improves. Kozan showed the required improvement on his Saturday’s race to win the concluding event nicely. Coroner, Ephialtes, Winloch, and Lady Ronald led early from Kozan, Tea Queen, and Glen Rossie. Kozan led on to the course proper and into line from Glen Rossie, Tea Queen and Winsome Hind. Kozan’had the race won at the last furlong where Tobacco Land came solidly and ran him to half a length, Winsome Hind a head away. Glen Rossie was four lengths back fourth, followed by Eminent, Tea Queen, Little Thrush, Normandy, and Kothen. , Kozan won well, and looks like improvin'- into a really good sort. Tobacco Land also improved, and finished well. Winsome Hind is another worth watching. Glen Rossie who was favourite, looked dangerous at’ the last furlong, but he was beaten after having every chance.
