Kilmister-Mattson Match A' RECORD BROKEN Helmet’s New Holder Good times were registered in some races at the Kilbirnie Stadium Speedway on Saturday evening. Kilmister, riding well, covered the four laps iu 78 3-ssec. in. the first race of his match with Mattson. Kilmister was ahead half-way through the race, when Mattson came off, leaving the Wellington man to ride out the race alone. The second race of the series was an exciting one. Kilmister took the lead at the first bend, but Mattson caught him, and led till near the end of the race, when Kilmister came to the fore to make a third test unnecessary. The time was 80 seconds. In the Grand Wellington Handicap, Gower was successful, being followed home by H. Mangham, one of the Palmerston North riders. Kilmister’s machine gave out during the final, ana he was unable to defend the Golden Helmet later in the evening. In the semi-final Kilmister broke the record from a standing start, 83sec., by one second. Near tragedy occurred in the next r ® c ®; Grove was riding at the head of the ueld turning into the home straight, when he came down.
