FOREIGN SHIPS
Recent Labour Trouble COMPANIES’ REPLY Dominion Special Service. Auckland, March 5. The recent trouble regarding the working of certain boats handling intercolonial and Samoan cargo was discussed at a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of The president, Mr. A. M. Seaman, gave two instances where watersiders, supported by the Seamen’s Union, had refused to work ship. The Government had been urged to protect the interests involved, but the matter had not reached the point where a definite statement could be made. The shipping companies concerned, however, had been in touch with other shipping companies to see if an agreement could be made to use non-union labour in the event of such a position again recurring. “This is a definite threat by the watersiders,” said Mr. W. A. Boucher. “The Government could not take a stand, but the shipping companies could.”
