DECLINE IN IMPORTS

That the decline in imports, which was manifest in the latter half of last year is being continued is revealed in the return of Customs dues that were paid in Auckland during January. The total collected was £139,557, compared with £187,830 in January, 1930, a drop of £48,273. Dues paid on motor spirits were greater by £3459, the figures for the respective months being £42,292 against £38,833. The dues paid on tires last month amounted to £2397 compared with £2987 in January, 1930. The total of the dues paid, Customs, motor spirits and tires, was £184,246, against £229,650, a drop of £45,404. Exciss duty on beer also declined, last month’s due being £7236 compared witn £8534 in the previous January.
