TWO EVENTS DECIDED
Palmerston North, Februaip' 2. The Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s district tournament was advanced a further stage on Saturday, but owing to several contestants being away the finals of only two events—the men a singles and men’s handicap, singles—were decided.. . The weather was ideal for play, while the courts of the Northern club were in good condition. Dr. Salmond, of Feilding, defeated McDonald in. the final of the. men’s championship singles in a three-set contest, 56, 6—o, 6—4. This contest provided one Of the best exhibitions of the game witnessed during the tournament. McDonald won the first set 6—5 by superior court tactics and play, but Salmons had little difficulty in winning the second set by 6—o. In the third set McDonald made a bold bid for victory. Although he secured an early lead Salmond rallied and, winning five games on end, won Following are the results:— . Men’s Championship Singles.—Semifinal: Salmond beat Robertson, 6—4, •I—6, 7—5; McDonald beat Hanlpn, 6—4, G 4. Final: Salmond .beat McDonald,. Combined Championship Doubles. - Quarter-final,:'Miss Astle and Einam beat Miss Sim and Whceley, 6—3, 6—3; Miss Carty and. Hankin beat Miss and-Fox, 6 —4, 6—2. Semi-finnJ: Miss Carty and Hankin beat Miss Astle and Einam, 6-4, 6—3; Miss Cummerfield and Boddy.beat Miss Innes and Robertson. 5—6. 6—2, 6 4. Men’s Handicap Singles.—First section : Semi-final —Swindell (14) beat Cope (8), 50-46; Jewell (9) beat Beckett (10), 50—44. Final —Jewell (9) beat Swindell (14), 52-50. Second section : Final—Rhodes (scr.) beat Wyber (16), 50-47. Wairarapa Games Masterton, February 2. Two Inter-elub matches in the Walrarapa Lawn Tennis Associations competitions were played on Saturday. In the A grade competition for the Gawith Shield, Carterton defeated Mangapakeha, at Carterton, by 18 matches to 1. Carterton won every one but one combined double. Mount Bruce defeated Dalefield by 19 matches to 5 and 121 games to 04 in the C grade match played at Mount Bruce. A match played between the Hukanui and Nlreaha Clubs last week resulted in a win for Hukanui by 21 sets to 3 and 92 games to 41. j 1 - •' ■
