NINE PEOPLE FINED Palmers ton North, February 2. It is stated that at the speedway meeting held on the Palmerston North showgrounds on New Year’s Night "over 300 persons gained admittance ta the grounds without paying the admission fee. The police paid a surprise visit to a roof of one of the buildings near the showgrounds and took the names of those who were, on it.- As a sequel-nine defendants appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the PoUce Court this morning, to answer charges of. gaining admittance, without .Whitehouse said that many person# had gained an. entrance to the grounds by going through the residence of houses m Waldegraye Street, which abut on the show-grounds, of these had mixed with the crowd, and others had stayed on. the roof of the building, from where the races could be witnessed. One party, he said, had theatened violence : ..to a speedway employee ‘ who had endeayoured to • prevent them. getting in. The case was brought as a warning to the public, and, as such, a heavy penalty was not sought. Francis Broderick, John David Blackburn, Everton R. Bryant, John Hollier Hodson, Edward A. Heaphy, R«*ard Thomas, and Roy Webster were fined 5/and 17/- costs, while Albert Edward Corley and Phillip Furnick were fined similar amounts with 197- costs.
