Tasman Street Surfacing
NOW MAIN THOROUGHFARE
Tasman Street residents who waited on the works committee of the City Council yesterday were assured by the chairman, Councillor R. .A. Wright, that the street would be on the first list of thoroughfares to be surfaced in the coming financial year. Mr. R. McKeen, M.P., who introduced the deputation, pointed out that Tasman Street was now one of the main routes to tho east, and carried a lot of heavy traffic, particularly since the establishment of the Winter Show. On account of the weight of traffic the street should be paved, not tar-sealed. It was at one time estimated that the job would cost £5OOO. Last year a schedule was drailed providing for au expenditure of £75,000 or. scaling and paving—£lo,ooo last year, £15,000 this year, and £20,000 for each succeeding year until the vote was exhausted. He had visited Tasman Street with (he engineer, who had said that nothing could be done until the hill at the far end was regraded That work had been put off year after year. There was no other main street in the city left un paved. . Mr. J. C. Eggleton placed in the hands of the chairman correspondence with the town clerk on Tasman Street extending over three years. He said that Tasman Street used to be a quiet, residential street, but through the diversion of traffic from other parts it was now a heavy traffic thoroughfare. It was the responsibility of the council to carry the traffic without being an annoyance to the public and a menace to public life. The chairman said the correspondence revealed a promise that Tasman Street would be sealed this year. That would be done. . ' Mr. T. Boon said the dust nuisance was such that he bad had to get rid of a house at a loss of £2OO. lhey would be all grateful if the council would do something of benefit to the residents of the street. Mr. J. Venables said that Tasman Street property was heavily rated. Tney ran as high as £l3/10/- a year for a 30ft. section. , The chairman said the work would be done this year. They could not begin this financial year, but in the next financial year (beginning in April) there would be £15,000 for road surfacing, and Tasman Street would be included in the first list.
