FIND AT POMPEII
Ancient Table Service
MAGNIFICENT BRACELETS One of the most important archaeological discoveries of modern days has been made at Pompeii, the city which was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79. In what was evidently (he plate'room of a patrician house in the famous Street of Abundance, a treasure chest containing a great number of finely worked gold and silver objects has been found. The. kernel of the collection was a silver table service for four persons, comprising goblets with saucers, soup spoons, saucepans, mirrors, a scent spray, and a water jug. All these objects were in solid silver, finely-worked with figures in bas-relief, the predominating theme being the labours of Hercules. Other objects in the treasure chest are: Two magnificent gold bracelets. Three solid silver plates with figures tn bas-relief in the centre. Thirteen gold rings. Two gold necklaces. One gold brooch.! Two pairs of gold earrings studded with jewels. Thirteen gold coins, and
Thirty-three silver ones, some belonging to the Republican era and some to the Imperial. The find was made in a house which had already attracted the attention of excavators owing to its obviously patrician appearance. A beautiful painted statue of Apollo and numerous rich frescoes had already been found, while the whole house was in a remarkably good state of preservation.
