TROUT FISHING
Good Catches Made
JANUARY SUCCESSES It is reported officially that the present month has been the most successful so far this season at the northern lakes for trout fishing. Very fine catches have been made, and many fish registering on the scales from 5 to 731 b. have been bagged on the spoon and the fly. At the delta a fish of 101 b. in weight was landed by one fisherjnap. The reports to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, show that the fishing at Huka Falls, near Wuivakei, has not been so good, and this is attributed to the fish having become “line shy.” There have been a good fishing in the famous Tongariro River, nt Rangitirn Point, Acacia Bay, Waitahanui, and at Whakaipo. It is stated that, judging from the large number of heavy fish so far caught this season, some very good specimens should be taken after March. t Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti have lately re-earned their reputation for good fishing, and some splendid fish have been bagged there. A fairly large number using the “yellow matuka,” have been fishing at Rotorua Lake, the mouth of the Awahau. Kaituna, near Okere, Okareeru Bay, Karere Point on Lake Tarawera. and also at the Aratiatia Rapids. From now on to the end of the season it is predicted that there will be even a greater number of fishermen in the lakes of the thermal district.
